The final of the One 2 Call British Women’s and Girls League took place at East Park and what a fantastic showcase it was.

The South and South Wales team were looking to go one better than in 2010 but the North & Scotland had other ideas. The team boosted with the appearance of Amber Webster who was taken to hospital during the previous round at Kesgrave with a broken scaphoid started with a 6-4 only for S&SW to level after heat 3.

S&SW then extended their lead with back to back 6-4’s but dogged determination from rider of the season Ellie Sullivan and Great Britain women’s captain Vicky Brown wouldn’t let the South get away. Scores at the interval were 32-28 in favour of a solid looking South team.

Charley Jane Herbert and Caris Glover increased their lead and rode to instruction by team manager Phil Davies to just share the heats with good team riding from Holly Morgan and Lauren Hookway to seal victory.

In the Eastern vs Midland match, the Eastern team were up against even before the tapes went up with rider shortages and having to once again use a guest rider, they knew it would be difficult with a Midlands team packed with experience and youth.

With some top draw team riding from Danielle Riley scoring two 7-3 firstly with Laren Jacobs then with Carly Grimes and two drawn heats against Charlie Ellitts and Jenna Whitehead then the unbeaten Lauren Davies this kept the Eastern teams hopes alive.

A tape exclusion for Midlands Sarah Olsen nearly opened the door but a solid 6-4 from World Champion Laura Watson and Abi Duckham sealed victory for the Midlands. Although a great team performance Jenna Whitehead’s 13+1 for the Midlands was the difference between the teams.

In the One 2 Call Grand Prix Individual Under 16’s

The racing was as fast and furious as in the previous rounds, major casualty was a fall and non finish for Sandra Tamborska. This cost Sandra an A final place but with that the chance to take the title. An ever improving Ellie Sullivan only missed out of an A final through count back, and a relieved Lauren Hookway knew booking that A final spot was all she needed to win the coveted trophy. Charlie Jane won the A to leap frog Sandra into second place overall.

In the One 2 Call Grand Prix Individual Over 16’s

It was nip and tuck in this age category with five riders in contention for podium places looking for four spaces in the A final. Some great action thought the heats and riders checking on what they needed going into their last races to make that all important A final.

Laura Watson was the one to just miss out. It was now down to the draw of gates with all four still within a shout of taking the title. Danielle Picked gate one, Tiff gate two Vicky three and Lauren four.

The next four laps seemed to take an age to complete with places changing behind and different permutations, but Danielle was gone out in front and controlling the race. Lauren just pipped Vicky on the way to the line for second and try as she might Tiff just couldn’t find a way through.

In the team GP South & South Wales made it the double with winning the BWGL League title and all the GP Team title. It is simple mathematics get more girls racing for your team and you will win the title, S&SW did this and are worthy winners.

This year’s competition may have had a few downs but overall there are definitely more ups and the standard of racing and the competitive edge gets more and more.

We have again had a small increase in the number of girls competing and the girls thrive on the competition and will bode well with the world championships in Australia 2013.  It is still to be decided what format will be used for next season for the BWGL but one thing for sure the racing will be even better guaranteed.
