Despite rain falling 38 riders braved the weather and turned out for round 3 of the Hallamshire Go Ride League staged at Sheffield’s Cookson Park circuit.

Racing started with the under 8/10 and 12 categories just as the steady rain began to fall (rain that would see the cancellation of the Sheffield Tigers speedway fixture).  Some standing water had to be brushed away from the corners in between races but the youngsters gave a great display of determined riding in the adverse conditions.

Sam Turney continued his dominance in the under 10s completing a 16 point maximum score and taking the grand final. Impressive newcomer Morgan Turner looks likely to provide a stern test for Turney when he gets to grips with the cycle speedway techniques. Turner is a top BMX racer with the Bolsover Club and has tremendous straight line speed that when coupled with a better cornering technique will make him a force to be reckoned with.  There were also two race wins apiece for Sam Bowles and Alice Turney.  In the under 8s Ted Bowles surrendered his unbeaten tag as he lost in the grand final for the first time this year to Tom Scott.  Scott had been providing all the excitement with three last bend passes in the qualifying races.

Ellie Sullivan also made it three rounds and three wins as she easily took the under 12’s with an unbeaten score.  Nearest rival Ed Morton had three wins but had to give best when the two met in the grand final. The qualifying races also saw Billie Owen, Daniel Rushton and Linden German record race wins.

As the junior finals were being completed the rain was beginning to ease and the skies cleared to leave the girls and open competition to be raced as the track began to dry out. The girls competition is a straight fight between international riders Vicky Brown and Sandra Tamborska.  Brown currently had the advantage having won the first two rounds.  Having met twice in the qualifying races (each taking a race win) it was down to who would make the best start in the grand final. Tamborska duly obliged with a blistering start to hold off Brown’s challenge.  Katy Unwin and Amber Webster each recorded a race win in the qualifying races and both Brogan Burn and Jayti Hines are beginning to look good prospects in girls racing.

The open competition probably provided the best racing of the night. Radek Handke was again unbeaten in the qualifiers, including one race when he made a hash of the start and had to come storming through from the back to eventual take Kyle Holland on the last lap. Holland then made an audacious move on the last corner that almost paid off.  Rob Mawhood claimed three wins out of four, including one where he profited from Aiden Owen and Louis German getting in each other’s way.  Handke made no mistake in the A final shooting from the tapes off grid one.

Owen claimed second place and holds on to his series lead by 63 points to Handke’s 50. Mawhood’s rejuvenated form continued as he claimed third place after a great battle with Holland that saw him just get up on the finish line.  Louis German won the B final from Mick Knowles, who was competing for the first time in 12 months. Niall Morton won the C final and so maximum points in the under 14 Grand Prix series.
