Reports and results week ending 9 October 2011

This was a match billed as a clash between the 2010 South West League champions and the 2011 champions elect with the Welsh club favourites to lift the title this season. Newport arrived without their talisman Mark Carmichael who was away in Poland racing in the league play-offs while Poole were without their two young stars Matt Mildon and Arron Morgan after their recent hospitalisation. After a Newport 6-4 win in heat 1, the home side took over and reeled off a string of race wins to lead 67-52 after 12 races.

Then Poole conceded three consecutive races with exclusions to Chris Shylock and Sam Hearn and it was anybodies match at 76-71. Hearn made up for his earlier error by teaming up with Pete Young for a match winning 7-3 in the penultimate heat which put the Welsh title celebrations on hold for a further week. Pete Young provided an experienced anchor man for the home side while Oli Sidwick gave further evidence of his talent with five race wins.

East Anglia U10/U13/U16/U19 and Open Championships and Norfolk U16 v Suffolk U16
Location: Harford Park Cycle Speedway, Norwich, Norfolk
Event: 8 October 2011
Report: Glenn Grange

This was the last big weekend of Cycle Speedway in 2011 for Norwich Cycle Speedway Club as they staged the 2011 East Anglian Riders Championships at Harford Park on Saturday, and then travelled to Great Blakenham for South-East League Division 1 action on Sunday to keep alive any hopes they have of winning the 2011 Division 1 title.

The action on Saturday at Harford Park was out of this world, and it was supplied by riders of all ages who contested the Championships. The Under 10s opened the day’s racing, and it wasn’t long before the pre-meeting favourites of Jack Chaplin of Ipswich and Mason Parkins of Norwich met. Both riders were unbeaten when they met in heat 14, but it was the new British Under 10 Champion who came out on top despite a monumental effort from Norwich’s Mason Parkins. Consequently Chaplin went on to win the under 10 title with 20 points from Mason Parkins who scored 19. Third place went to Harrison Bacon of Kesgrave with 18 points. Aaron Mills of Norwich had a good match scoring 12 points.

Next up was the Under 13s, and again, top class racing belied the riders age as they gave it all they had to give. Colchester’s Lewis Davies went on to win the meeting after he scored 19 points, but he had to have a run-off with Kesgrave’s Matt Gifkins. Davies went on to make amends for his earlier defeat to Gifkins by easily winning the run-off. Surprise packet Dane Parkins of Norwich went on to defeat Pierce Bacon of Kesgrave in a run-off for third place after both riders had scored 18 points. Rohan Ewbank of Norwich had a good final as he finished in sixth place with 15 points.

With light rain beginning to fall, the under 16’s were next on track and with the extra hazard of lightly falling rain, once again the 16 riders served up some exciting racing with Hethersett’s Scott Grimes coming out on top scoring 19 points. Charlie Rumbold and Ashley Hill of Ipswich had to have a run-off after both riders scored 18 points to finish second and third respectively with Norwich’s Oliver Riley just missing out on a podium place by scoring 15 points.

Next up was the Open/Under 19 Final, and again a Norfolk rider was to take the 2011 title by scoring 19 points. David Martin of Hethersett dropped his only point in his opening ride to Gary Brown and then went on to record four race wins to take the title. Phillip Adams of Hethersett and Gary Brown of Kesgrave both tied on 18 points, with Phillip Adams taking the chequered flag in the run-off to finish second. With the Under 19 title being staged as well in the Open Final, it was Phillip Adams who won the competition from Charlie Rumbold of Ipswich and another surprise Oliver Buxton of Hethersett.

With the rain continuing to fall, Norfolk Under 16s took on Suffolk Under 16’s in this annual event, and with Suffolk having a powerful octet, the visitors from over the border quickly showed their class as they quite simply took Norfolk apart. Only Scott Grimes, who scored 18 points, Oli Buxton and Axl Johnson went on to score 13 points and Isaac Bocz who scored 12 offered any resistance as Suffolk went on to finally win in the end by 77-103.

Event: 9 October 2011

Norwich travelled to Mill Lane, Great Blakenham for South-East League Division 1 action, and came away with an easy 74 - 101 win. Despite having only two recognised heat leaders, Gt. Blakenham tracked six riders, and it wasn’t long before it became a thankless task for the hosts.

Leading 32-55 at the interval, Norwich eased their way to a well earned victory led by Oliver Riley (16+2), Danni Riley (11+3) and returning Veteran Chris Cullum (11+1).

Hull v Sheffield
Location: Hull Cycle Speedway, Hessle, East Yorkshire
Event: 9 October 2011

Hull clinched the runner-up slot in the Northern League at home to Sheffield in the season's closer with an 84 points to 66 victory.

Overnight rain left the Hessle Raceway saturated but the riders coped well with the surface to produce some good racing. A fortnight previously Radek Handke had proved unbeatable for Sheffield, and he again proved to be the Tykes top man dropping just one point in five starts.

The match started cautiously with two drawn heats before Hull took a 6-4 from Andy Angell/David Cooper and a Ben Swanborough/Adam Stephenson maximum establish a six point lead. Hull took further 7-3's in heats 6 and 8 which sandwiched Radek's only defeat at the hands of British Champion Andy Angell. The home side had a 14 point interval lead, but as in Sheffield, the visitors were able to stem the tide in the second half thanks partly to the claiming of inside grids.

Sheffield's first heat win came in heat 10 from Radek Handke/Liam Webster as the challenging Matt Beharrell was unlucky to slide off. Radek teamed up with Kyle Holland for a 6-4 in heat 13 but Hull kept in control with 7-3's from Adam Stephenson/Graham Storey and Andy Angell/Matt Beharrell who entertained a large crowd with a final heat win on 24'' wheeled club bikes. Another good all round display from Hull with Andy Angell and Adam Stephenson only dropping one point each, while Sheffield also competed well in a great advert for the sport.

Result

Hull 84: Andy Angell 19, Adam Stephenson 16+3, Matt Beharrell 15+1, Graham Storey 14+2, Ben Swanborough 13+1, David Cooper 7.

Sheffield 66: Radek Handke 19, Liam Webster 11+1, Lewis German 10+1, Kyle Holland 10+1, Aiden Owen 9+2, Luke Morton 3, Vicky Brown 3, Richard Hudson 1.

Combination League

In the first combination match The Sheffield Rockets ran out comfortable 90 points to 60 victors over a Hull side all aged under 16. The match was still well contested as the nine heat wins by 6 points to 4 for the visitors confirms. Hull's only drawn heats came courtesy of David Cooper who won his two starts in heats one and six and from Nathan Everett / Joe Sewell who chased home Rob Mace in heat 9.

Luke Morton was unbeaten from four starts for the visitors with Rich Hudson, Rob Mace and Nial Morton all riding well. Hull's Andy Cooper handled the conditions well to claim four second places with Rob Stockton Garner also in the thick of the action.

Result

Hull 60: Andy Cooper 12, Rob Stockton Garner 10, Nathan Everett 9, David Cooper 8, Joe Sewell 7+1, Katie Greaves 6, Harvey Southcoat 3, Charlie Wade 3, Finley Southcoat 2.

Sheffield 90: Rob Mace 18+1, Nial Morton 17, Like Morton 14+2, Rich Hudson 13+2, Ed Morton 13, Daniel Rushton 9, Kyle Holland 4, Lewis German 2.

The second combination match saw Sheffield Phantoms predominantly female side contest a much closer meeting. Indeed the first four heats were drawn before Vicky Brown/Aiden Owen took a 7-3 in heat 5. Hull levelled things with two 6-4's and the scores were still level after 11 heats. Both team managers seemed determined to keep the scores close as Hull threw in their young reserves and Sheffield resisted the temptation to over use their more experienced counterparts. Heat 9 had seen a classic race with Amber Webster holding off Katie Greaves with both riders using every inch of the raceway. The Phantoms finally broke the deadlock with an Ellie Sullivan/Aiden Owen 7-3 in heat 12 and the points wrapped up with a 6-4 in heat 14.

Hull's David and Andy Cooper were both unbeaten from three starts with Rob Stockton Garner and Joe Sewell impressing in a good team display. Sheffield's Vicky Brown and Ellie Sullivan were the pick of a good Phantom's side that contributed to the best combination match seen at Hessle this year.

Result

Hull 70: Rob Stockton Garner 13, David Cooper 12, Andy Cooper 12, Joe Sewell 8+1, Nathan Everett 8+1, Katie Greaves 6, Finley Southcoat 4, Harvey Southcoat 3+1, Charlie Wade 2, Charlie Davis 2.

Sheffield Phantom's 80: Vicky Brown 17+1, Ellie Sullivan 17, Amber Webster 11+1, Rob Mawhood 11, Lindon German 10+3, Niamh Morton 7, Aiden Owen 6+2, Liam Webster 1.
