Ipswich v Norwich
Location: Ipswich Cycle Speedway, Ipswich, Suffolk
Event: 4 September 2011
Report: Sharon Stant

Ipswich went into this league fixture knowing only a win would do to keep their hopes alive of a first league title challenge and would be looking to eat into a thirteen point advantage their Norfolk neighbours have after the first two matches between these heavyweights.

All started well for the Suffolk side with Barker moving at the tapes in the first heat and thou Ian Grange went on to win the heat the Suffolk outfit were content to take the 5-4 on offer, the following two heats were shared heat four saw Ipswich score an unlikely 7-0 when first Barker took down his team mate Parkins. Then the unthinkable happened when for some reason the Norwich pairing returned to the pits without crossing the finish line, both riders were deemed not to have finish the race.

Two more shared heats followed before heat 7 saw Norwich claim a 6-4 to close the gap to six points , Ipswich responded with a 6-4 in the next and a shared heat just before the break saw the Suffolk club eight points to the good half time score 47 - 39.

To Norwich credit they came out in the second period fired up and claimed heats 10 and 11 with two 6-4's to close to within four points, heat 12 saw Cossey get his marching orders for moving under orders, the Suffolk side took full advantage to record a 7-2 win and move nine points clear.

The next two heats were once again shared before disaster in heat 15 when going round the first turn the Norwich riders came together, then Barker was lapped to conclude a nightmare afternoon's racing, his third exclusion of the afternoon. However, the drama didn't stop there with Ipswich going into the last heat 14 points to the good and coming off the inside grids they were looking to pile more misery on their opponents only to suffer two tape exclusions.

This just took the shine off what was a superb all-round team performance and though they might have had the chance of wiping out that advantage, it sets it up nicely for a winner takes all at Eaton Park as long as both teams remain unbeaten till then.

Result

Ipswich 89: Josh Brooke 15, Ashley Hill 14, George Solomon 13, Leon Mower 13,
Jamie Chittock 12, Richard Williamson 12, Dan Pike 8, Lewis Roberts 2.

South East Youth League

Ipswich claimed the league title this afternoon with masterful display of team riding and put their nearest rivals to the sword with no mercy taking their winning streak to fifteen matches.

In fact their last defeat was to Norwich at Eaton Park in April 2009, many of the present team still have two more years at this level and would take a brave man to bet against them lifting the trophy for years to come with younger riders knocking on the door with the likes of Chaplin, the Harvey's brothers and Warner just to name a few the future looks bright at this level.

This is no surprise to the present crop with most of them being part of the Suffolk team South East Division Two squad that looks on course to retain its title as well, but credit to the Norfolk team who didn't drop their heads with the brother sister combination Oli and Danielle Riley spear heading the Norwich attack and the likes of young gun Mason Parkins who looks a real talent the future.

Daniel Knights looked untouchable and wasn't beaten by a Norfolk rider to finish on 19+1 ,while team captain Charlie Rumbold led by example recording a fine 22+2 from six rides, while Terry Gilbert-Rolfe can be pleased with his afternoon's work scoring 11 points .

Result

Ipswich 100: Charlie Rumbold 22, Daniel Knights 19, Richard Fellgett 17, Will Clark 14,
Matthew Hill 11, Terry Gilbert-Rolfe 11, Fraser Harris 6.

Norwich 60: Rob Warminger 13, Oliver Riley 12, Danielle Riley 11, Mason Parkins 10,
Dane Parkins 6, Owen Wells 4, Rohan Ewbank 4.

East London B v Kesgrave
Location: East London Cycle Speedway, London
Event: 4 September 2011
Report and images: Brian Barnett

East London having only a team of five riders were able to defeat a spirited Kesgrave team.

East London opened the match with a 7-3 with a pairing of Neil Lester and Dave Tulloch. This pairing maintained this scoring for three races they rode together.

Kesgrave's Gary Brown winning four races, until heat 13, when he was held at the back with the team riding of East London's Dave Tolloch and Steve Woodroof.

Credit should be given to both teams, Kesgrave having a team of younger riders then East London. Kesgrave's performance was great, never giving up with East London's team of five riders calling on their experience to defeat Kesgrave.

Result

East London 87 Kesgrave 71

Hull v Bury
Location: Hull Cycle Speedway, East Yorkshire
Event: 4 September 2011
Report: Andy Schofield

Bury started their Northern League fixture at Hull in a determined manner with a 6-4 to Chris Parish/Paul Dyson but the home side replied with a similar win for Adam Stephenson/Graham Storey.

Light rain was helping the track conditions but was making starting tricky on a greasy gate. Andy Angell took his first race as British Champion in heat 3 and teamed up with Ben Swanborough for a 7-3. Hull were getting into their stride now and opened up a 16 point lead by the interval. Chris Parish was proving a formidable opponent for Bury holding off the challenge of Andy Angell in heat 5.

The second half started well for the Comets as Neil Howarth/Luke Jamson took a 7-3 as the Hull riders crashed to the floor on the opening bend. Hull quickly stopped any hopes of a Bury comeback with a 7-3 to Graham Storey/Matt Beharrell in the following heat and Matt went on to partner Corey Graham and Andy Angell to maximum race wins in heats 13 and 15. Hull provided 12 heat winners and crucially also filled the minor places which has sometimes been their downfall.

Adam Stephenson raced to an excellent maximum for Hull with Andy Angell and Matt Beharrell dropping only one point and all the side racing well. For Bury Chris Parish was a class act with Neil Howarth and Paul Dyson battling hard for points.

Result

Hull 88: Adam Stephenson 19+1, Matt Beharrell 16+3, Andy Angell 16+3, Corey Graham 15, Ben swanborough 12, Graham Storey 10+1.

Bury 62: Chris Parish 16, Neil Howarth 13+1, Luke Jamson 11+1, Paul Dyson 8+2, Chris Dyson 7, Stephen Ward 5, Will Owens 2.

Division 2

Despite a 20 point penalty an experienced Bury side comfortably beat a much younger Hull team by 97 points to 73. David Cooper and debutant Matt Fenny won races for Hull with Andy Moody and Andy Cooper teaming up for a couple of drawn heats. Neil Howarth and Luke Jamson were both unbeaten for the visitors with all the side scoring well.
