Major sponsor announced for 2011 British finals

British U16 and Open Individual Championship Finals
Event: 29th August 2011
Event Details

A top Norwich sports club has landed a major sponsor for one of the biggest sports events to be held in the Norwich and wider Norfolk area this year.

Norwich Stars Cycle Speedway club, on behalf of the Norfolk Cycle Speedway association, are staging the 2011 British Finals at its Eaton Park, South Park Avenue, Norwich track, on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August.

The British Finals are the major event in the Cycle Speedway calendar. The 2011 British Final, which is expected to attract well over a thousand people crammed into Eaton Park, is the only British Final, of any sport, to be held in Norwich this year.

The Norwich based car spares, accessories and bicycle retailer, Wilco, has stepped in to sponsor the showpiece event, which is being promoted as a community Bank Holiday leisure attraction and which will carry free admission to all.

Wilco, which has a portfolio of 42 stores in East Anglia, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire along with an online business, will be providing competition awards, advertising support and assistance with staging costs of the British Finals - now in its 60th anniversary year.

Mr Ian Grange, secretary of Norwich Stars Cycle Speedway club, commented: "We are pleased to welcome such a major name like Wilco on board as the title sponsors of the 2011 British Finals. It promises to be a wonderful, free to enter, event for not only large numbers of outside visitors but scores of local families as well".

First held in 1951, the British Final is the stand out event of the sport. The last Norwich based rider to be crowned British champion was the explosive starting Phil Howells in 2003, repeating an earlier triumph in 2000, both in the colours of Hethersett Hawks.

The reigning British champion is the robust Mark Boaler from the Oxfordshire village club Horspath Hammers. Boaler is likely to be a leading contender again this year, alongside Lee Aris of Wednesfield Aces of Wolverhampton and Birmingham star Marcus Wadhams.

The British Final at Eaton Park on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August will be a culmination of three days of intense competition. Qualifying rounds and other age category finals will be staged on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August at nearby Hethersett and Harford Park tracks.

Formed in 2003, Norwich Cycle Speedway club have been one of the leading lights in the sport since its inception. The club have been members of the elite Premier League and have provided countless age category British finalists over many years.
