Premier League Table and Results

Sheffield v Poole
Event: 3rd July 2011
British Premier League
Report: Shaun Hudson
Images: Richard Seipp

Although Sheffield won by twenty points this was an entertaining fixture and Poole kept the score close in the opening heats.

A heat 3 7-3 from Angell and Handke got the ball rolling for Sheffield however a couple of well taken 6-4 wins from Poole in heats 5 and 7 kept the scores close. Only five points separated the teams at the interval and Poole were obviously here to make a match of it however Sheffield started the second half with 2 heat advantages courtesy of Angell & Brown then Hoyland and Handke.

The killer blows came in heat 14 and 15 with two 7-2 from Winwood and Hoyland then Brown and Birks after Poole had Hearn excluded for a racing incident and Clukowski for a tape infringement, the match was now all but over. For the visitors Tom Reed was a class act and dropped just the one point to Jono Birks and Matt Mildon also showed what an incredible talent he is.

For the home side it was very much a team effort with everyone contributing vital points, it was nice to see Jamie Brown and Mark Winwood  amongst the points and Lee Grange, Leigh Cossey and Ryan Hoyland, five riders who were the engine room of the team.

With Horspath having lost at Leicester and Sheffield still to entertain both teams, the Premier League is still up for grabs!!!

Leicester v Horspath
British Premier League
Event: 3rd July 2011
Report: Tim Jarvis

This was always going to be a tough match - and it certainly was! Raced in front of a three figure crowd the racing was fast and furious with numerous incidents to keep referee John Whiting busy.

Leicester raced into an early five point lead but back to back maximums from Boaler and Scymczak and Heard and Harris saw the Hammers take a five point margin into the interval.

The restart saw the fireworks begin, Stephenson made a stormer from four and Ashford joined him at the front at the end of lap one. Boaler chased Ashford and the two came together at the end of lap three, both ending in a heap, Scymczak missing the melee to take second and Boaler remounting to take third.

Heat 16 proved the real turning point though. Lewis Osborne received a tapes exclusion at the first attempt, in the re-start Adam peck shot off into the lead, Lukas Nowacki, chasing hard, pulled alongside

Steve Harris along the home straight only to end up in a heap after a heavy collision with the starting gate.
Harris was adjudged to have used excessive force and was excluded, Leicester's world champion suffering nasty facial injuries which ruled him out of the rest of the meeting. Peck and replacement Yelland then took the formality of a 7-0 to put the Monarchs three points up.

The next heat saw Timms and Howells collide and both riders were excluded following an altercation on the track. Stephenson, having a great meeting, took the match race in the re-run from Scymczak. The final heat was shared and the home side clinched a four point victory.

In all honesty Horspath should have won this one, simply settling for positions and finishing races in the latter stages would have given them the league points, but credit to Leicester who never gave up the fight and sent their supporters home happy.

Results

Leicester 88: (M Wadhams 16, A Peck 14, C Marchant 13+2, A Stephenson 13, L Nowacki 10, L Yelland 6+1, J Ashford 5+1)

Horspath 84: (P Heard 16+1, C Timms 15, M Scymczak 14+1, S Harris 11, M Boaler 10+2, M Carmicheal 8+1, L Osborne 6, C Osborne 4)

Premier Combination

Horspath opened with a 6-4 advantage but this particular race flattered to deceive, the home team firing in ten maximums in the remaining twelve heats to totally outclass the Hammers and move to the top of the table.

Leicester 83 Horspath 45

Midland Div 3

A highly competitive match ridden before the PL fixture. Lee Kemp notched a maximum for the Bulldogs but the home team just had the strength in depth to take the win.

Ipswich v East Newport
Event: 3rd July 2011
Report: George Solomon

Ipswich took their first victory of the season on Sunday over East Newport, winning 96-78 to avenge the defeat that East Newport had put over them in the first match of the season. Ipswich were too strong for the Welsh side and were always in relative control, leading by nine points at half time and extending that to 18 by the end.

Ben Mould was in unbeatable form for the visitors, but wasn't backed up by his team mates, whilst various riders excelled for Ipswich, Jason Barker and Jamie Chittock looking particularly impressive considering their relative inexperience.

Sticking to the ‘five-fives from the outs' and ‘six-fours from the ins' mentality, Ipswich always looked in control and so it proved, as they eradicated the silly mistakes that have cost them dear regularly this season and took their chances when they presented themselves.

There were several good battles on the track, Jordan Stant and Cory Jones battling hard in the first half, with the Newport rider coming out on top after swapping positions several times during the four laps. Unfortunately, Jones wasn't able to continue after that race and it was left to fellow reserve rider Rob Absalom to take his rides. Leon Mower was, as ever, getting stuck in and making several passes, leaving referee Mike Legge with a few tough decisions, which he coped well with.

In the second half, despite a stronger start, East Newport's challenge faded and claiming the inside gates saved them from a larger deficit of defeat. But today was Ipswich's day as they got themselves two valuable points on the table - and go to Sandwell in three weeks with a spring in their step.

Results

Ipswich 96: J Stant 10, J Brooke 15, J Barker 14, L Mower 10, J Chittock 17, D Pike 9, A Hill 7, G Solomon 14.

East Newport 78: A Herbert 11, A Hughes 11, N Evans 12, D Bock 7, B Mould 20, C Davies 8, C Jones 2, R Absalom 7.

Combination Match

Ipswich 77: J Mason 8, L Roberts 15, C Rumbold 14, M Hill 11, W Clarke 7, L Jacobs 11, R Fellgett 11.
East Newport 47: S Bendon 8, J Cutler 5, N Greenslade 14, J Davis 5, Colin Wildy 9, M Davies 6.

Wednesfield Aces v Sandwell Lions
Event: 3rd July 2011
British Premier League
Report: David Jewkes

Wednesfield Aces snatched victory by the smallest of margins against Black country rivals Sandwell Lions in front of a bumper crowd of spectators gathered at a sunny Ashmore Park race curcuit, and they were treated to a superb sporting display of top notch racing between these two evenly matched teams.

The Aces were kept in the hunt for the points in this match by the brillant work and heat wins at crucial times by their youngster's Dylan Radcliffe and Ben Higham against a lions team that had come out in the early stages snarling and looking hungry for the points,

Sandwell took full advantage in the first heat when the Aces skipper Chris Jewkes was excluded for a false start at the tapes and in the re-run Lions captain Lewis Bates did a great shielding job by holding the Aces Ben Higham back in 3rd place allowing his team partner Jamie Ball to take the race win 7-2 to the lions, the Aces came back in the next heat with a 6-4 reply, but then in heat 3 the lions really roared when their pairing of Errol Thaw and Lee Smith caught the Aces napping and returned a 7-3 heat win letting the home team now that they had a match on their hands,

Wednesfield hit back in heat five after a drawn heat with a crucial 7-3 from Dylan Radcliffe and Ben Higham pairing keeping the scorline close with Sandwell at this stage in the lead by three points and they increased their lead by five points in the next heat, both teams then consolidated a little in the next two drawn races, then as the interval was approaching the Aces team manager Roger Ellis used his joker switching the reserve and bringing in supersub Dylan Radcliffe to partner Mark Griffiths the outcome a 7-3 advantage to the Aces going in at half time one point down 44-45.

The second half of this meeting was nail biting for both sets of supporters as the lead chopped and changed several times and the win could have gone either way, heat ten was a drawn heat and then Sandwell extended their narrow lead with a 6-4 heat win from the Lee Smith and Thaw pairing to put them three points up again, then Wednesfield struck back in heat twelve to tame the lions with a brilliant 7-3 heat win from young Ben Higham and Jewkes pairing to put the Aces in front for the first time in the meeting by just one point 60-59.

Sandwell would not lay down and they came biting back with a 6-4 from Lewis Bates & Jamie Ball to put themselves back in front by a slender one point lead again 64-65, the next race was drawn but only after what was possibly the pass of the day by Aces Stuart Bentley on Errol Thaw to take the crucial 3rd spot, the Aces had Radcliffe and Aris coming out in heat 15 and the pairing had a superb gate and first corner relegating the Lions pair of David Ball and Lee Smith to the minor places and they made no mistake returning a 7-3 putting the Aces in front by three points 76-73 with three heats to go.

Supporters were on their toes as the riders came to the tapes for the next race and the Aces rider Mark Griffiths produced his customary super fast start to get the better of Lewis Bates and Scott Millward but this time his team partner Higham was blocked out at the back resulting in a drawn heat and the Aces still holding their three points advantage, but that was soon to change in the penultimate heat when the lions came roaring back with a 6-4 heat win from Lee Smith and partner Jack Harrold to put the Lions just one point in arrears going into the final race.

With the Aces having former multi British Champion Lee Aris off grid one with partner Luke Draisey on three up against the Lions pair of Matt Smith and Errol Thaw Wednesfield knew all that was needed was for Aris to hold his grid one and win the race with Draisey just happy to finish and not get a exclusion and the league points would be in the bag for the Aces, and Aris did what was expected and took the race win 5-5 Aces winning by just a one point margin 90-89.

A superb cycle speedway match and great to watch.

Premier Combination

The Aces second team made no mistakes in taking the combination league points in this match fielding a mixture of experience and youth and it certainly paid off with them taking heat win advantage in eight of the 13 heats and four drawn races only allowing the visitors a last heat 7-3 consolation win, top scorer for the Aces was Matt Haddock 14+1 and top scorer for Sandwell was Ricky Johnson 15+1.

British U19 Club Championship
Event: 3rd July 2011
Images:  Brian Barnett - www.cyclespeedwayphotos.co.uk

Hethersett Hawks/Swinton and Co travelled to Wolverhampton's East Park to contest the British U19 Club Championship with twelve other clubs.

Drawn in a first semi-final with four others, they settled well to a track much bigger than their own and one that none of them had visited before. Securing a run of second and third places they were still in contention but Ben Collins hit the outside kerb after a collision and fell off.

At the halfway stage the Hawks were still in third place but a rousing race win by 15-year-old Scott Grimes in heat 12 lifted the spirits. Phil Adams was flying on the open spaces and he also got a race win in heat 15 before a fantastic ride in the penultimate heat which saw him go flying past Welsh international

Dan Bock on the outside before crashing to the floor and getting excluded for causing a race to be stopped.

That was so unlucky but up popped substitute Tiff Collins to get a vital third place in the final heat to secure third place in the match. Despite being eliminated it was a terrific performance by the Hawks.

The home side used a squad of eleven riders and used the occasion to give a debut to seven year old Honey Whitehead. Monarchs number one Liam Davies remained unbeaten from his completed rides but Arran Pointer saw to it that no other Leicester rider went through the card.
