The falling Autumn leaves that covered the back straight of Stockport's Webb Lane track suggested the outdoor 2009 cycle speedway season had finally come to an end but not before Sheffield's Piotr Jamrosczyk rode to victory in the 4th annual Dave Blinston Memorial Trophy.
Previous competition winner Stockport's Terry Norman started the day well with a first heat win and rumblings round the track favoured the rider to take the trophy for a second time and it was almost to be but the day didnt go all Norman's way and dropping two points in heats seven and nineteen resulted in him securing a ride off race with eventual winner Jamrosczyk.
Heat three saw Andy Angell excluded for a tape violation off grid four and a short walk back to the pit area, the only points dropped by the Hull rider allday and his proceeding four rides brought a win in every heat.Another exclusion in the next heat saw Stock Whiterock's Richard Harrison also take the short walk back to the pits which left Sheffield's Jamrosczyk to take his first win of the afternoon.
By heat nine with all riders having two rides,Norman,Wednesfield's Chris Jewkes and Stokes's Lewis Bates all sat with seven points with a further three riders one point adrift including Jamrosczyk.Further heat wins from Norman in heat nine and Chris Jewkes in the following heat saw the two riders pull a one point lead over Jamrosczyk but Jewkes' bid for the trophy came to an end with a poor third place in heat fifteen and an exclusion two heats later left the Wednesfield rider with thirteen points from the day.
Heats sixteen and seventeen saw two strong rides from Jamrosczyk which brought the Polish rider within one point of Terry Norman and the final outcome of the day was down to the home rider to take a win in his final outing in heat nineteen but it wasn't to be and Stoke's Richard Harrison spoilt the party and took the heat win from Norman, which left a ride off between Norman and Jamrosczyk for the trophy.Tight riding between the two gave some exciting racing but The Polish rider eventually got the better of Norman and took the Blinston trophy after a good days racing. The ride off for third place saw Lewis Bates the victor after Andy Angell slipped at the tapes and theres no way back when bates has a placing in his sights.
