Murphy Shield - Scotland vs. Ireland

14th June 2009, Edinburgh

Report: Tommy Lee

Scotland defeated Ireland in the 2nd leg of the now renamed Murphy Shield by 100 points to 73 (aggregate 168 to 133).

Leading by 8 points from the first leg Scotland, started the 2nd leg slowly with an exclusion from Craig Newsome in the first heat, ensuring a heat advantage to Ireland. However, a full house in the 2nd heat from for Scotland in the form of a 1st and 2nd place for Jake Slight and Mikey Hewitson respectively kicked started the home side into action.

With Scotland providing 14 of the 18 heat winners the points advantage built up steadily heat by heat ensuring a comfortable victory in the end.

For Scotland Nathan Groves once again showed a great turn of speed to reel off 5 straight victories, building on his performance in the previous day's Home International. Richard Hunt, whilst scoring 14, managed 3 bonus points to prove what a great team rider he is.

For Ireland, Craig Norton, riding from the reserve position, scored 17 points which included 3 out of the 4 race winners for Ireland. The other win going to Barry Copping in heat 14 who ended on 13 points.

Both Team Managers, Gav Kennedy and Gary Colby, were delighted with the inaugural running of the Murphy Shield and it was a fitting tribute to the man himself, Johny Murphy, who chose today to retire from the Ireland international scene.

14th June 2009, Wednesfield

Leicester went into the interval one point up at 43-44 but in the second half Wednesfield proved the better team, stringing three 7-3s and three 6-4s together to win the match by eleven points, The only bit of controversy during the match came in heat 6 when first Roger Cox was excluded for causing a race stoppage and then in the re-run Leicester's Carl Jarvis was excluded by match referee Michelle Aris for use of the leg against Scott Doherty.

There were also two combination matches with Wednesfield facing Leicester's Lions and Monarchs, with Leicester wining both fixtures having a stronger set of riders against a younger Wednesfield team.

Northern League: Stockport vs. Hull

14th June 2009

Report: Andy Schofield

Stockport 82 Hull 67 Northern League

Hull travelled to Stockport on a hot day minus several regulars and were expecting a tough meeting. Stockport included former British Champion Terry Norman in a side that was otherwise made up of fast improving juniors.

Terry took the first heat win for the home side with Hull filling the minor places for a drawn heat before Matt Beharrell tucked in behind Andy Norrie for a 7-3 in the second heat to give the visitors the lead. Stockport hit straight back after a Ben Swanborough tape exclusion with a Dylan Radcliffe / Ben Higham 7-2 and the lead see-sawed over the next couple of races with the hosts a point up after 6 heats. The newly laid track was bedding in well but was uneven in places and a combination of Terry Norman's good form and the judicious use of reserve Dylan Radcliffe opened up a five point gap at the Interval.

The second half started with two drawn races including an exciting heat 10 where the in form Matt Beharrell raced away for the visitors while Andy Angell was uncharacteristically held at the back by Ben Higham. Stockport made a breakthrough with a Terry Norman / Matt Lush 7-3 in heat 11 and were 7 points up with two races left. Hull momentarily looked to have a glimmer of hope as Andy Norrie / Darren Spencer led heat 14 but Ali Lam / Matt Lush recovered for a 7-3 and the home side wrapped things up with a Ben Higham / Terry Norman maximum in the last heat.

Terry Norman was unbeaten for Stockport with Dylan Radcliffe and Ben Higham showing a massive improvement recently. Hull's Matt Beharrell only lost to Terry while Andy Angell had some good races and Ian Swanborough dug in for some good points after stepping up to the first team. Riders from both sides struggled in the heat but put on an entertaining match for a good sized crowd.

Result

Stockport 82: Terry Norman 19+1, Matt Lush 9+2, Jack Lush 10+1, Jake Read 5, Ben Higham 15+2, Ali Lam 8+1, Dylan Radcliffe 16.

Hull 67: Andy Angell 13, Ian Swanborough 10+2, Ben Swanborough 6, Darren Spencer 10, Matt Beharrell 17+1, Andy Norrie 11.

Combination: Stockport 72 Hull 47

Stockport comfortably won the combination match to cement their position at the top of this league. Hull's Matt Beharrell provided the main opposition dropping his only point to the unbeaten Dylan Radcliffe. Heat 11 was the best of the meeting with the visitors Ben Swanborough holding off Ben Higham for 3 1/2 laps before Ben swept through with Jake Read close behind. Hull saved their best team riding for the final heat where Andy Norrie helped Rob Spik through for a drawn heat.

Result

Stockport 72: Ben Higham 13+2, Jake Read 10+1, Dylan Radcliffe 14+2, Ali Lam 7, Jack Lush 13+1, Joe Pickford 5+1, Matt Lush 10+2

Hull 47: Ben Swanborough 5, Matt Beharrell 15, Andy Norrie 8+1, James Hunt 4, Ian Swanborough 6, Rob Spik 9+1
