Welsh Riders' Open Cycle Speedway Championship

Andy Whitehouse was on hand to watch a fine day's action at the Welsh Open Cycle Speedway with both open and under-16 categories racing on abrilliantly sunny Autumn day at Newport.

Report

All in a day's work! Two of cycle speedway's rising stars took the Open and Under 16 titles in the Halfords Bikehut sponsored Welsh Championships held at East Newport's 'The Polo'.

Poole's Ben Mould added the Welsh Under 16 title to his 2009 National Jersey with an excellent display of riding taking five first places and securing an unbeatable twenty points. Runner up spot was taken by Horspath's Mark Carmichael with a fine ride to gather nineteen points only losing out to Mould in heat twelve with a second place. Bronze medal went to the promoting club's Ryan Lewis who won the third place run off with Jack Turner, both finishing on fourteen points.

Roles were reversed in the open final with Mark Carmichael and Ben Mould keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats until the last heat with Mould one point adrift and with Carmichael taking grid one position the Poole rider was always going to need a very strong gate. Carmichael was too strong to beat and his twenty points showed why the classy Hospath rider has a great future in the sport. Three riders finished the day equal on seventeen points, Mould, Niel Power(East Newport) and Filton's Chris Davies. Already knowing a second jersey wasn't going to be his Mould rode a hard race to ensure he walked away with the silver medal. Niel Power took the final podium place for a fine bronze medal, but the day belonged to the two rising future stars of Cycle Speedway, Ben Mould and Mark Carmichael.
