Dan Goodey is one of our network of Recretion Managers, working hard to increase cycling participation in Yorkshire. He certainly practices what he preaches, commuting to work three times a week. His bike of choice? A cyclo-cross bike - for those in the know - a smart choice for all kinds of riding.

Name: Dan Goodey

Job Title: Recreation Manager - Yorkshire

Tell us about your commuting rig:
Plain red, no decals, cyclocross frame, 700c wheels, eats up the miles quickly. Drop bars and disc brakes with cross top levers so I can sit up to see over the cars and stop quickly if I need to. Puncture resistant 30mm touring tyres to cushion those lumps and bumps. Just fitted some cheap lights for the winter.

What’s your commute like?
Changes all the time, some days it’s a few miles on the bike and a train ride, other days 10 miles each way, rarely more than that. Sometimes i jump off the train early and follow the canal towpath home when the weather is good or I want to let off some steam.

How many days a week do you commute by bike?
2 or 3 on average.

What do you enjoy the most about bike commuting?
Not sitting in traffic in the car – I hate that! Especially if a bike rides past, makes me feel guilty and a bit envious too.

What’s your least favourite thing about commuting by bike?
Carrying a change of clothes and getting changed when I arrive at work

What are your main reasons to commute by bike?
It’s about time for me, it can save time on the journey quite often, saves me feeling like i need to find extra time to keep fit, if I bike to the train I can work while I travel, sitting in the car is just dead time.

Have you got any funny or interesting bike commuting stories or experiences to share?
Just the habit I have of forgetting to pack normal shoes – don’t know why I do it, i remember everything else. I have cliperty clopped into quite a few meeting with my cleats on.

What’s your killer commuting tip?
Puncture resistant tyres, worth their weight..... A long lock so it can go through the frame, both wheels and around something solid like a lamp post.

How does your British Cycling membership support your bike commuting?
Good piece of mind if I do bump into someone or clip a wing mirror in traffic.
