British Cycling member TomZ's Dolan FXE fixed gear commuting bikeName: Tom Z

Workplace: Guitar Shop, West London

Tell us about your commuting rig: Dolan FXE Fixed Gear. A great low maintenance bike drilled for bottle cages, brakes and mudguards.

What’s your commute like: I ride 16 miles each way, the first thing I am faced with each morning is one of the Chilterns famous short and sharp hills. After that has woken me up nearly the whole ride is along quiet country roads. Its beautiful out there! I have found some alternatives if I want to throw in some dirt roads or parks, I love to mix it up.

How many days a week do you commute by bike? Three  to four. I try to ride as much as I can but I do reluctantly drive in as I need a car for work sometimes.

"The people I have met. The other commuters that I ride with and chat to if we happen bump into each other."

What Tom enjoys the most about bike commuting.

What do you enjoy the most about bike commuting? The people I have met. The other commuters that I ride with and chat to if we happen bump into each other. Also the red kites, pheasants, crisp air, silence, moonlight, misty mornings, sunrises and sunsets.

What’s your least favourite thing about commuting by bike? The food bill, surely one lunch is enough!

What are your main reasons to commute by bike? Fitness, save money, see the world, sanity.

Have you got any funny or interesting bike commuting stories or experiences to share? I was following what appeared to be a old military personal vehicle through the lanes once. It was not moving fast and packed with people and dogs. It could barely make it past because of its width. Chatting with one of the chaps on the back while we went along I found out they were taking their gundogs beating. I didn’t know anything about it till then. Lovely chap.

What’s your killer commuting tip? Find yourself the most pleasant route you can and enjoy the pace of riding.

Are you a British Cycling Member? Yes, and a Willesden CC Member

If so how does your British Cycling membership support your bike commuting? I’m glad to know the insurance is there if I need it.
