British Cycling member Maggie's bike commute makes her feel 'thoroughly human'. How about you?

Name: Maggie Thompson

Workplace: Age UK Dudley

What’s your commute like? Hilly – on-road

How many days a week do you commute by bike? Generally twice, dependent on weather and travel to meetings.

What do you enjoy the most about bike commuting? Freedom, endorphins from exercise, opportunity to use canal towpath on return journey to enjoy nature on an otherwise urban route. Feel thoroughly ‘human’ on arrival at work with big grin on my face.

What’s your least favourite thing about commuting by bike? Heavy traffic and exhaust fumes.

What are your main reasons to commute by bike? Love of cycling in general, keep fit.

Have you got any funny or interesting bike commuting stories or experiences to share? Lovely to watch Canada Geese chicks grow up along canal section – so long as father goose doesn’t take a nip at me!

What’s your killer commuting tip? Crossing railway bridge near Brierley Hill where there is an extended pavement with a raised kerb and barriers (to protect pedestrians), reducing the space for traffic on the road and causing a ‘pinch point’ that could squeeze a cyclist off the road.

Are you a British Cycling Member? If so how does your British Cycling membership support your bike commuting? Yes. Knowing that I am covered by insurance should I have an accident.
