British Cycling and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) are collaborating to deliver an exciting package of training courses in 2023

All the courses listed below are free for any Greater Manchester resident (subject to application). Click the link to enrol, tell us why you deserve a place and how you will inspire more cycling across Greater Manchester - and a place could be yours!

Kickstart your coaching with a Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Cycling.
Develop your skills in leading rides with a Level 1 Ride Leadership.

Develop your inclusive coach by taking the Inclusive Coaching Workshop
   

Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Cycling

A blend of online learning and practical training and assessment – Level 1 coaching focuses on teaching cycling skills to build ability and confidence in a traffic-free environment as well as the planning, risk assessing and delivery of these coaching sessions.
 
How long will the course take to complete?

6 weeks minimum - this includes 4 weeks access to online learning and two face to face days. Under normal conditions development and assessment days will be spaced a week apart.

What does the course qualify me for?
 
On completion of this award you’ll be able to coach the essential cycling techniques to groups of riders.

Ride Leadership Award Level 1

The Ride Leader course is classroom based and practical.  The aim of the course is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to lead and supervise rides, both on and off road. Perfect for clubs, groups friends out on a ride, school groups and community groups.

Please note, attendance on one of these courses does not enable you to join the HSBC UK Breeze and/or HSBC UK Guided Ride programmes. You must complete a specific Breeze or Guided Ride course to enable you to do so.

How long will the course take to complete?

One day for the course, plus half a day online learning.

To be a fully qualified Ride Leader to lead local, club or community rides you will also need to have a First Aid qualification.

Fundamentals of MTB Leadership

An accessible mountain bike leadership course where leadership principles take centre stage. This course has been developed by experts from the outdoor industry to enable you to lead groups of children, young people and adults in easy to moderate off-road environments.

How long does the course take to complete?

  • 3-4 hours of elearning via British Cycling Learning
  • 16 hours training and assessment course with a British Cycling Tutor


What do I need to be able to register?

  • The minimum age to attend a course is 17 years old.
  • You must be able to ride a mountain bike (or another appropriate bike for the terrain) comfortably on roads with some traffic, off-road and mountain bike trails up to blue grade, be regularly riding and have an appropriate level of fitness
  • Ideally complete a logbook to evidence your recent rides. We recommend a minimum of ten rides of at least 1 hour and five rides of at least 2.5 hours duration (inclusive alternatives are available by request) over the last six months.  We have a downloadable Logbook that can be saved electronically or printed if needed.


What else do I need to do to achieve the Award?

In order for your award to be accredited in addition to successful completion of your Fundamentals of Mountain Bike Leadership, you are required to:

  • hold British Cycling Membership of Ride level or above.
  • attend and evidence a two-day outdoor First Aid course
  • undergo and evidence safeguarding training appropriate to the country they are leading in


These can occur after your Fundamentals of Mountain Bike Leadership course, but your award will only be provided on receipt and acceptance of these.
