Coaching young riders

Share |

The Coaching Young Riders Continued Professional Development (CPD) workshop has been developed by British Cycling, in consultation with sports coach UK using the recognised current good practice in sports coaching and education.

It aims to help coaches to encourage and support their riders to take responsibility for their own development from an early age, not only during coaching sessions but in their life outside cycling.

The workshop is aimed at coaches who are primarily working with riders aged 7-12 years i.e. Key Stage 2 (upper primary) of the National Curriculum. It has been designed to enhance knowledge and understanding of coaching young riders so coaches are able to deliver fun, challenging and engaging coaching sessions.

The workshop has been designed in a modular form enabling coaches to complete the workshop over one day or each module in stand-alone sessions. Module content has been designed to help coaches focus on the coaching sessions they deliver, sharing their experiences with other coaches, helping them learn through a reflective coaching process.

The four modules covered within the workshop are:

  • Child Centred Coaching
  • Coaching the Whole Child
  • Building Relationships and Rapport
  • Promoting a Positive Learning Environment

How much does the workshop cost?

  • A full day workshop which covers all four modules costs £120 (£130 for courses that commence after 01/04/2014)
  • A half day or evening workshop which covers 2 modules costs £60 (£65 for courses that commence after 01/04/2014)

Where will the workshops be delivered?

The workshops will be delivered regionally throughout the UK. Please contact Coaching & Education for dates and venues.

If you are part of a cycling club who would like to host a workshop we will be able to arrange something for you and your coaches. For more information contact us.

What do I need to bring to the workshop?

The modules are classroom based and therefore you won’t need a bike or any cycling equipment.

Continued success at the highest level is inspiring a boom in participation across the nation. There have never been more opportunities to ride a bike, be it for fun or sport and British Cycling is at the heart of this growth. As a British Cycling Qualified Coach who coaches young riders, you are a valued member of the team and your continued involvement in the sport is fundamental to future success.
