British Cycling coaches up for UK Coaching Awards 2012

Cycling coaches Julie Judson, Belinda Tarling and Paul Manning have been shortlisted for awards at the UK Coaching Awards 2012.

Judson has been named as a finalist in the Gillette Community Coach of the Year Award, Manning is a finalist in the High-Performance Coach of the Year category and Tarling is in the final three for the Coach Educator of the Year Award.

Paul Manning entered coaching following a successful track-cycling career. After a year working with the men’s endurance academy in 2010, Paul was approached with a view to working with the women’s endurance podium riders.

The success he has enjoyed has been there for all to see, and has included Olympic Games and UCI Track World Championships gold in the women’s team pursuit (Dani King, Joanna Rowsell, Laura Trott) and women’s omnium (Laura Trott) – as well as a host of world records.

Manning is continuing his development spending time with other world leading sports teams to see what he can learn and bring back to the GB Cycling Team.

As a full time Coach Educator with British Cycling, Belinda Tarling has been instrumental in the delivery of cycling’s rider-centred coaching philosophy to Level 2 and Level 3 coaches.

Using her experience from a successful 12 year career in Cross-Country Mountain Bike racing, Belinda has been key to the development of the Level 3 Certificate in Coaching MTB, and in its delivery in her role as a tutor and assessor.

She has also developed sportive training plans for the Insight Zone, and supported Cycling Ireland in the delivery of their first Level 2 Road & Time Trial course. 

Julie Judson is a coach with Wrekin Riders BMX club and has developed a number of coaching courses specifically targeting women and girls as an introduction into the sport, as well learn-to-ride taster sesions (including for those with a disability) and a huge number of innovative group and individual developmental coaching sessions.

She attends/manages most of the club’s activities This includes a minimum of three hours free coaching (unpaid) every Saturday, schools coaching (after school), and schools sportivate coaching (primary and secondary)

Her work has seen more people to become involved in BMX and a significant number of riders racing regionally, nationally, and some, to world standard.

Also shortlisted for the High-Performance Coach of the Year Award are David Weir’s coach Jenny Archer, Rory McIlroy’s coach Michael Bannon, Hannah Cockroft’s coach Peter Erikkson, Ben Ainslie’s coach David Howlett, Jessica Ennis’ coach Toni Minichiello, Greg Rutherford and Johnnie Peacock’s coach Dan Pfaff and Ellie Simmonds coach Billy Pye.

Also shortlisted for the Gillette Community Coach of the Year Award are athletics coach Sonya Ellis and boxing coach Quinton Shillingford.

The awards take place at the Lancaster, London in a glittering ceremony on the evening of 20 November.
