PARENTAL INFORMATION The Club encourages participation in cycling by riders of all ages and abilities. Child Welfare Officers: the Club acknowledges and is acutely aware of the need to accommodate the needs of young riders in a strictly appropriate and legal manner. To this end, and in order to meet the requirements of British CyclingTM (BC), the Club has appointed two Child Welfare Officers, both of whom are women and both of whom have attended (in Oct 08) an NSPCC based course entitled “Safeguarding and Protecting Children”. Their personal contact details are available to parents / guardians / carers from the Club Secretary. Additionally, the Club has adopted and follows the guidelines described in the BC Document entitled “Policy and Procedures for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults”. These can be found at: http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/nmsruntime/saveasdialog.asp?lID=507&sID=5483 or a copy of them is available from the Club Secretary. Child Protection Policy Statement Hold a register of every child involved with the club and have a contact name and number close to hand in case of emergencies. Treat everyone with respect. Remember that some issues are confidential. Provide an example we wish others to follow. Where possible, always consider running activities that involve more than one adult being present or at least within sight and hearing of others. Remember, someone else might misinterpret others’ actions even if they are well intentioned. Respect a child's right to personal privacy. Provide time for children to talk to you. Encourage children to respect and care for others. Take action to stop any inappropriate verbal or physical behaviour. Remember to REFER not INVESTIGATE any suspicions or allegations about abuse. Only share concerns and seek support from those identified in the club's child-protection policy. Rhos-on-Sea Cycling Club recognises that child protection should not be treated in isolation – we have adopted the British Cycling guidelines. We accept that it is our responsibility as a club to check that all new adult coaches/helpers with regular access to children have been appropriately vetted. We will use the vetting checklist to help in this process. We may carry out an extended CRB check if we have any particular concerns. We will ask for the "Child Protection - Personal Profile Form" to be completed which will include the names of two referees who will be prepared to provide a written reference, and who may be interviewed personally. We will interview prospective coaches/helpers. We will note at interview all previous relevant experience of coaches/helpers. We will carry out a probationary period for all new coaches/helpers of at least three months. These details will be held on file and available from 1st January 2009. We shall appoint at least one (ideally two) designated Child Welfare Officers responsible for implementing the Child Protection Policy. Rhos-on-Sea Cycling Club believes that every child, regardless of age, has, at all times and in all situations, a right to feel safe and protected from any situation or practice that results in a child being physically or psychologically damaged. In our club, if we have suspicions about a child's physical, sexual or emotional well being, we will take action. All coaches or helpers are encouraged to share concerns with the club's designated Child Welfare Officers. If the situation is clearly an urgent case, the child is too frightened to go home or we have very serious doubts about the child's safety, we will contact Social Services or Police immediately. If the concerns are more general about a child's welfare, then these will be discussed with the club’s Child Welfare Officers at the earliest opportunity, usually on the same day. The c will then make a referral to the Social Services, who will then make the necessary arrangements. It is important that all coaches/helpers communicate concerns accurately. To this end, coaches/helpers will follow the procedures below. 1. Upon the receipt of any information from a child or suspicions, it is necessary to record what they have seen, heard or known accurately at the time the event occurs. 2. Share their concerns with the club’s Child Welfare Officers and agree action to take. 3. Never investigate. PARENTAL CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE Parents need to be aware of the Club’s requirement for them to consent to their Young Riders participating in the series of ride types that are collectively referred to as “Club Runs”. These usually, but not exclusively, take place on Saturday and Sunday mornings and on Tuesday evenings. Young Riders are welcome to join all “Club Runs” however the Club requires the written consent of parents to allow them to do so. In signing the written consent form, Parents are advised of the need for them to be satisfied that the Club will welcome Young Rider participation, that the group of riders will accommodate the Young Rider(s) within the group as they would any other competent rider, but that no individual or groups within the ride will be responsible, either individually or collectively, for the safety or wellbeing of the Young Riders. Having said that, and whilst riding within a Group, in the event of any accident or incident involving a Young Rider, it may reasonably be expected that other riders will give assistance and/or advice to Young Riders in line with good common practice, whilst always observing a duty of care towards the Young Rider. This might include the application of immediate First Aid in cases of immediate need. |
