About our club

The University cycling club welcomes riders of all disciplines and abilities. We have two main sides to the club, road cycling and mountain biking. Both meet two to three times per week for group rides and have social events on a regular basis.

Road Cycling: The road cyclists have club rides every Wednesday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday, on routes taking in the beautiful country roads surrounding Durham, with longer rides often up into the Pennines or down to the Yorkshire Dales. For those who like to compete, in addition to the university BUCS events, the local racing scene has plenty to offer with regular Criterium series and Road Races throughout the season. The club also organises several trips during the year, these include a pre-season training camp in Spain in January and a post exams visit to the nearby Lake District.

Mountain Biking: The mountain bikers enjoy riding local trails around the Durham countryside along with trips to other trail centres around the country, e.g. Dalby Forest, The 7 Stanes in Scotland, and more locally Hamsterley Forest. There is also the opportunity to race in events ranging from the university BUCS races to national events, such as the Mountain Mayhem.

Coaching and ‘strength and conditioning’: The club offers various extra training and coaching opportunities to all its upgraded members. These include coaching sessions for road cyclists aiming at improving riding and racing skills while also giving advice on training programmes and techniques, turbo training sessions, and coach led ‘strength and conditioning’ sessions in the gym.
