The Government and Transport for London’s package of announcements today to tackle the danger of HGVs on our roads will mean “fewer people on bikes killed” said British Cycling’s Martin Gibbs.

Responding to the package of announcements on HGVs, British Cycling’s Director of Policy and Legal Affairs, Martin Gibbs, said: “The bottom line is that fewer HGVs on the streets of our towns and cities means fewer people on bikes killed.

"Closing the outdated loopholes that allow HGVs to take to our streets without the latest safety measures, including mirrors and sidebars, is an obvious step and something for which British Cycling has been calling.

“The Government says it wants more people to use their bikes to get around and to do that it has to take a firm grip of how HGVs use our urban roads.

Improving HGV safety on the roads is fundamental to the Government’s aim of encouraging more people to use bikes to get around so we are pleased that they and Transport for London are starting to take this matter seriously.”
