Progress can be hard to make on your own, but there really is strength in numbers and by working together responsibly with other partners we can achieve our aim of transforming Britain into a great cycling nation.

The following examples are a reflection of our ambition to get everyone thinking about what happens if we change the way we move.

HSBC UK

The HSBC UK British Cycling partnership is like no other sponsorship. Working across the sport from participation at the grassroots to major organisational events, through to the highest level of performance with the Great Britain Cycling Team, our ambition is to make cycling the UK’s most popular activity and sport of choice.

One of the biggest and most visible ways we have worked together since partnering in 2017 is the series of HSBC UK Let’s Ride events. These city-centre cycling festivals encourage people to get out on their bikes and ride a traffic-free circuit. In 2018 over 135,000 people took part in the free events – cycling over 1,494,150km in the process.

Fully embracing the partnership, HSBC UK is encouraging its workforce of 53,000 people to make positive changes to choose cycling as a greener and healthier option while also drawing together networks of key employers in cities around Britain. By doing so, they hope to spearhead the development of insight-led recommendations that will help to instil cycling within every workplace.

See.Sense

Our four-year partnership (which began in 2018) sees British Cycling use the insights detected from See.Sense’s intelligent bike lights to help improve cycling conditions across the UK.

When cycling with a See.Sense bike light the patented sensor technology within the light monitors your riding experience. This includes detecting real-time information on collisions or near-miss events, road surface quality, journey flow, speed and dwell times. You can then choose to share these aggregated insights with British Cycling via the See.Sense app.

Using the data from See.Sense, we are working together with local authorities to improve road surfaces for a smoother and safer ride. This mostly helps to target funding and improve cycling infrastructure, contributing to a more enjoyable ride.

Evans Cycles

Evans Cycles is an official partner of HSBC UK Go-Ride, British Cycling’s flagship programme for young people. Providing over 1,500 HOY bikes to run coaching and racing sessions across the country, the partnership will help to deliver over two million opportunities for young people to get into cycling by 2020.

Providing regular, traffic-free sessions for kids to ride is hugely important to embed cycling as a habit for life. By doing so, we are encouraging an entire generation to choose cycling for leisure, transport and possibly as a route into being a medal winner. Without these passionate youngsters, we lose a future force for change and further reinforce the childhood inactivity crisis.

Madison

Despite nearly three quarters (74%) of all parents believing that teaching children to cycle is an important life skill, research conducted by HSBC UK and British Cycling in 2018 highlighted a reluctance to ride, especially by mums. Almost half of mums across the country (45%) haven’t ridden a bike in the past year and neither have over a third (34%) of dads.

The result of parents not cycling is clear: a third (33%) of parents said their child cannot ride a bike.

In 2018 we launched HSBC UK Ready Set Ride: a fun and free way to teach children how to ride. The three-step process is full of short, easy games that help kids to develop the key skills you need to ride a bike.

HSBC UK Ready Set Ride is being delivered by teachers in hundreds of schools across the country, with Madison supporting them with discounted equipment and a local network of bike shops to keep the bikes in good working order. Madison staff have also helped to promote the programme at our HSBC UK Let’s Ride events, offering access to a range of new bikes for families visiting on the day.
