The opening meeting of the 2018 HSBC UK | BMX National Series takes place this weekend with riders heading to the home of British Cycling for rounds one and two.
The HSBC UK National Cycling Centre will host the first two rounds of twelve in this year’s series.
How the series works
Riders are awarded points based on their results in each round (up to a maximum of 100 points per round). A rider’s best seven results from the 12 rounds in the series makes up their total. The rider with the highest total in their respective category is crowned HSBC UK | BMX National Series champion.
Superclass
Great Britain Cycling Team Senior Squad riders Paddy Sharrock (Mid Lancs BMX) and Kye Whyte (Peckham Challengers BMX Club) will be in action on their home track this weekend.
With the opening rounds of the 2018 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup at the end of March, both riders will be looking to find form ahead of a busy international season.
Whyte will be looking to go one better in 2018 - having finished second in the series behind Curtis Manaton who does not race in Manchester.
They will be joined by Development Squad riders Ross Cullen (Preston Pirates BMX Club) and Tian Isidore (Peckham Challengers BMX Club).
Championship women
2017 junior world champion Bethany Shriever dominated the HSBC UK | BMX National Series and will look to continue her excellent form in 2018.
The Supercross BVC Bikes Europe rider will take to the startline in Manchester as the red-hot favourite.
Her main challenge will come from Charlotte Green - the Cornwall BMX Racing Club rider finished second behind Shriever in the 2017 series.
Great Britain Cycling Team Development Squad riders Ellie Featherstone (North East BMX Club) and the Blackpool BMX Club duo of Lauren Anyon and Imogen Hill will also provide competition for the podium places.
Venue
The HSBC UK National Cycling Centre in Manchester is the home of British Cycling - and the BMX track is where the Great Britain Cycling Team BMX squads train on a daily basis.
The track opened in August 2011 and the elite track begins with the only eight metre start hill in the UK.
