Report: Cornish Championships Round 5

Words: Alan Humphrey

The fifth round of the Cornish Championships took place at Blackwater on June 11 and the rider turnout was reduced a bit by a number of the usual competitors attending the National BMX event at Braintree, Essex. However, what the entries lacked in number they made up for with enthusiasm with some close, fast racing recognising the opportunity to gain those vital points towards overall Championship victory.

It proved to be a night of domination by certain riders with Louie Kessell taking a full compliment of wins in Male 6 & Under from Rhys Fraser. Zak Hudson romped away with the wins in combined Male 7/8s from Ewan George in moto one and Jack Nation in the others. Fintan Jones held off the challenges of Louise Penfold in the 9s to consolidate his lead in the Championships whilst Tyler Caddy led home younger brother Josh in the 12-14s. Daniel Commons-Lomax swept the board in the 10s and holds on to his overall series lead. Matthew O'Brien took an early moto win but Matthew Berry took the other three with a close finish in the Final ahead of Harry Collins and Matthew O'Brien, barely a bike's length dividing the three as they crossed the line.

Daniel Davis won all in 16-17s ahead of Jake Quintrell, Dan Lord and Owen Reed twice. Dave Herman continued his winning ways in the 40+ Open group, which was combined with 30+ and Ladies 25+. Simon Rickett took the first moto and Alex MacMillan and Sue Bowden took honours in their respective classes.

The next round of the Champs is at Portreath on 23rd June and both clubs continue their sessions at their tracks, details of which appear at www.cornwallbmx.co.uk and www.duchypirates.co.uk . The next big event on the racing calendar is the South West Summer Series regional event at Burnham on 20th June.
