South West Region BMX Summer Series Round 2 – Cheddar

Story posted April 20 | from Alan Humphrey

The idyllic setting of the Cheddar BMX track at the Broadway House Holiday Park saw a turnout of just shy of 300 riders for the second round of the South West BMX Summer Series. Thirty six of the entrants were from Cornwall BMX Club’s ‘Yellow Army’ resplendent in their newly issued racetops for 2010 kindly funded by local companies, QES, Clear-flow, SCB Groundwork Contractors, E A Grey Civil Engineering Solutions, M Harvey & Son. Ltd., 1st Call Skips of St Austell, NJC, Truro Tyre Centre and Highway Plant.

With riders having come in from other regions to get practice in ahead of this weekends’ National event at the track, Ashley England found himself up against tough opposition but availed himself well with a couple of moto wins and 4th in the final in Expert 7s.  In the Novice group for 7-9 year olds Liam Bridger rode consistently well with second places throughout the day. In Expert 10s it was Alex Diment who once again stamped his authority on the group with some stunning performances and a well deserved set of wins for maximum points.  At the other end of the age spectrum Ian Wherry, the Club’s coach, took four second places in the Cruiser 45+ category.

The Club’s thriving female contingent saw Laura Berry win all her races in Female 7-8 years whilst Megan Wherry did likewise in 9-10 years.  Katie Kemp found herself in a mixed group and though she won her three motos had to settle for 2nd place in the final. The Cruiser classes were well supported with the club providing a large contingent of riders on the bigger 24” wheeled bikes.  Nathan Bache had a lucky escape when he fell on a jump and was jumped over by club mate Jack Lanyon, Jack managing to stay on to finish in third place.  Jake Quintrell took two moto wins and the Final in Cruiser 15-16 years.

Round three of the Series is at Portreath, home of the Duchy Pirates, on 9th May and promises to be another closely fought event at which the ‘Yellow Army’ will potentially have even more riders.  New members to the Club are welcomed and the Club has sessions at their track on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights.  Details of all the Club’s activities can be found on their website at www.cornwallbmx.co.uk.
