Daniell to lead GB charge against France at opening Revolution

David Daniell is relishing the prospect of facing French world champion Michael D’Almeida as he prepares to lead Great Britain in a sprint competition against France in the opening round of the Revolution season, which kicks off on Saturday 29 October in Manchester.

Twenty-one-year-old Daniell produced an impressive performance at the National Track Championships, where he finished second only to Sir Chris Hoy in all three sprint events. Already a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Daniell will be eager to take his turn at the top of the podium when he faces up to cross-Channel rival and current Team Sprint World Champion, 24-year old Michael D’Almeida.

With the confidence gleaned from his three National Championships medals, Daniell is feeling good going into battle at Revolution.

“I took a bit of a break after the National Championships, and then have since hit the training hard,” Daniell said. “Fitness-wise, I feel like I’m back to where I was the week before the Nationals and I haven’t lost any races since! So with the confidence I’ve gained from those performances, I’m feeling pretty good going into Revolution.”

He continued: “The Revolution events are always great to ride. The Velodrome gets packed out and the atmosphere is much more buzzing than the other track meets we ride in. The crowds are always noisy so hopefully they’ll get behind me when I’m racing.

“I’ve raced against Michael [D’Almeida] before in the 2008 World Cup in Manchester and he edged me out in the quarter-finals. Twice it came down to a photo finish though! So I’m definitely out for revenge. I haven’t seen him race yet this season so I’m not sure of his form but hopefully mine will be better,” he smiled.

Adding more young talent to the sprint line-up will be Junior World Sprint Champion John Paul who will be in action against D’Almeida’s compatriot, Thierry Jollet. Revolution favourite Craig MacLean will be lending some world class experience to proceedings.
