The penultimate day of the National Youth and Junior Track Championships opened with qualification for the Under 16 Boys' and Junior Men's Sprint competitions. The Juniors were up first and provided the crowd with their first opportunity to see newly crowned Junior World Champion John Paul in action - resplendent in his new rainbow skinsuit.

Sprint qualifying

Tom Baker of Team Terminator was the first rider to break 11 seconds for the 200m Time Trial, clocking 10.934 seconds. The penultimate rider - also returning from a successful trip to Moscow where he finished fifth in the World Junior Keirin final - Matthew Rotherham of scienceinsport.com, moved to the top of the leaderboard with a 10.803 but ‘JP' stole the show with a sensational 10.573 to take top seeding for the sprint rounds.

Chris Lawless (Maxgear) and Oliver Wood (Aire Valley) have dominated the Under 16 endurance events this week. The one chink in their armour was the 500m Time Trial, where they finished well down, behind the specialist sprinters. Would the same happen again?

The 500m champion Ryan Whatmough of Shepherd's Cycles was certainly in good form - one of eleven riders to break the 11 second barrier and one of only four to under 11.8. His 11.701 - a shade faster than Ryan Owens (Welwyn Wheelers) who managed an impressive 11.775 - was only good enough for third, though. Wood was the first of two riders under 11.7 - 11.664, in fact and the other? Lawless, of course, fastest by nine thousandths of a second on 11.655.

Junior Men's Individual Pursuit

The sprint competition proper would come later. Next we had the qualifiers for the Junior Men's Individual Pursuit which was split into three batches of heats. Will Stephenson of Bournemouth Arrow was on top of the leaderboard at the end of the first session with a 3:42.298 but the head of the competition was expected to be 20 seconds faster than that. In the opening heat of the second session Cam Swarbrick of AW Cycles took a second off Stephenson's time - clocking 3:41.484 - but was caught and passed by Sam Lowe (Raleigh) who flew to the top of the timing charts with a 3:30.720.

That time still stood at the end of the second session, but Scratch race champion Rob Lambton went a shade quicker - 3:30.688 - in the penultimate heat. The last heat saw Hargroves Cycles teammates Owain Doull and European Individual Pursuit champion Jon Dibben go head-to-head and, on this occasion, it was Doull that came out on top - albeit not by much - recording a time of 3:23.180 just over a tenth up on Dibben's 3:23.320.

Junior Men's Sprint

The sprint competition resumed and the first round went to form with the faster riders from qualifying all going through. Paul eased past a very nervous looking Taylor Cardus (Velo29) and Rotherham, Baker, Sassan Emadi of Tunstall Wheelers, Ed Bird of Ciclos Uno and Sean Mayer of Lyme RC joined him in the quarter-finals with Alistair Thomas (Sportcity Velo) and Jack Webb (CC Cardiff) joining the line up from the Repechages.

All four quarter finals were decided in two matches, Paul looking confident against Webb, Rotherham despatching Thomas and Baker looking completely in control with Mayer. Emadi showed off his speed in chasing down and cruising past Bird - for which his reward was a semi-final against Paul.

Emadi changed skinsuits between his two semi finals - a broken zip meaning that the Tunstall Wheelers rider would spend the rest of the day riding in a borrowed Lyme RC outfit - but he couldn't change the outcome. Paul was another step closer to adding a 2011 National Champion's jersey to his European and World titles. Baker ran Rotherham close in the first match - the scienceinsport.com rider taking it on the line - but couldn't get close in the second.

The final was an entertaining display of sprint tactics and craft, but the result was never in much doubt. Paul's sheer speed meant both matches were won half way down the back straight. Another jersey for the collection.  Baker took the Bronze after another two entertaining matches against the impressive Emadi with Bird winning the minor final.

Under 16 Boys Sprint

The huge field for the Under 16 Boys Sprint meant two rounds before the quarter-finals. The competition is the only one at the Youth and Junior Nationals to be split over two days with the semi finals and final on Friday.

The nine first round matches all went to form - the faster qualifier making their way through - with the exception of the match between Louis Preston (Lyme RC) and Jack Hoyle (Term Terminator), with Preston - five places and almost a tenth of a second behind Hoyle over 200m - taking the win. Hoyle made it through to the second round through the Repechages along with Jake Womersley of Aire Valley and Dan Maslin of Prestige Velo Club.

Round 2 saw the same pattern repeated with Lawless, Wood, Whatmough, Owens and Westwood - the fastest five qualifiers - go through along with Preston, who took another scalp sixth fastest qualifier Adam Lewis of Wolverhampton Wheelers. T he natural order was resumed as Lewis made it through via the Reps - along with Hoyle - to ensure that the seven fastest qualifiers, plus twelfth placed Preston, progressed to the quarter-finals.

Two of those were over quickly - Lawless going through at Lewis' expense in two matches and Westwood overcoming Owens without the need for a decider. The other two went to three matches with Whatmough becoming the first rider from the top half of the draw to get the better of Preston - only to see the Lyme RC rider beat him across the line in the second match. Whatmough got it at the third attempt, though and Preston would finally finish in a very creditable sixth just behind Lewis in the minor final.

The most incident packed race of the session was between Wood and Hoyle. Wood won the first match and was ahead in the second with Hoyle coming round them. They touched and Hoyle went down heavily - Wood, adjudged to have caused the accident by moving out of the sprinter's lane, was relegated. The decider was almost a carbon copy of the previous match with Hoyle coming round Wood in the closing stages but this time they both stayed up and Wood stayed ahead to progress to the semi-final.

Under 16 Girls Points Race

The race was still all together for the opening sprint of the Under 16 Girls Points Race and the bunch sprint saw Emily Nelson of Halesowen A&CC come out on top, ahead of Alice Barnes of Motorpoint Cycling, Amy Hill of Newport Velo and Nelson's team mate Emily Kay.

A group of four broke clear at the whistle for the second sprint - Kay taking it ahead of Barnes, Paige Millward (Lyme RC) and Kim English (Welwyn Wheelers), leaving Kay and Barnes in the lead, tied on six points.

A brave attempt by Ellie Gilham of Bournemouth Arrow to break away was just a little premature and she was caught by the bunch with two to go before the next sprint which Hill took from Louise Borthwick (Edinburgh RC), Keira McVitty (Kings Cliffe Flyers) and Kay - which was enough to see Kay clear at the top of the leaderboard.

Borthwick tried to get away for the next sprint, but was caught and passed on the run in by the bunch in full flight - but not before she picked up second place behind, inevitably, Kay. Barnes took third with Nelson fourth - leaving Kay four points clear of Barnes.

Now English and team mate Bethany Hayward made a concerted effort to get away, before being joined by Rebecca Hunt of Cardiff Ajax and Nelson. They go half a lap on the field but, as the pace picked up, their efforts to take a lap looked unlikely to succeed. They did pick up all of the available points next time round - Hayward winning the sprint from Nelson, Hunt and English - which moved Nelson into second place three points behind Kay.

The bunch was all back together again for the final sprint, but it was the usual suspects leading the charge with Kay taking maximum points ahead of English, Barnes and Nelson. Kay took the title with a commanding seven point lead over Barnes with Nelson taking the Bronze.

Junior Women's 500m Time Trial

Another rider that came back from the European and World Championships with a bag full of medals was Victoria Williamson of Welwyn Wheelers - and she added a National title to that today. Five riders went under 38 seconds - Jessica Crampton of Sportcity Velo - despite one false start - clocked 37.865 and Hannah Barnes of Motorpoint Cycling missed out on the podium for once, recording a time of 37.756.

Rosie Bount of Derby Mercury did get on the podium, her time of 37.668 good enough for Bronze and Lucy Garner secured Silver with a 37.234. Williamson, though, was almost a second quicker at 36.353.
Junior Men's Individual Pursuit

The Bronze medal ride-off was plagued by a couple of technical problems - aborted once at around the halfway mark because of a fault with the timing equipment, it was restarted - after a delay to allow the riders at least some time to recover - and ended in some confusion with a premature firing of the gun that signals the end of the race.

That almost certainly affected the times, but it didn't affect the result - Lambton took the Bronze.
The delay also meant that Doull and Dibben's carefully planned and timed warm-up was now out of synch with the delayed race start. Dibben said afterwards that it made the final much harder, but you wouldn't have known it watching from the stands. Two evenly matched riders can make for a strangely sterile Pursuit - but not these two.

Dibben started the faster of the two - opening out a gap of four tenths of a second after 500m which he doubled after four laps - posting an opening kilo time of 1:10.464. Then the gap started to come down - by 2km there was just 28 hundredths between them and by 2500m Doull was six tenths up!

A lap later the gap was five tenths and with 500m to go, it was gone. Dibben was back on top and put over half a second into his team mate in the last 250m to finish with a 3:22.088 to Doull's 3:22.658.
