New Brompton Bike Dock at Guildford

Posted: 14th July 2011

South West Trains, in partnership with British folding bike manufacturer Brompton, have recently launched the first self service Brompton bike hire dock and Guildford station in Surrey.

The bike dock, taking up the area of just one car parking space, contains 80 Brompton folding bikes, which can be hired by registered users for just £1.60 a day.The dock itself is a sleek and futuristic affair, constructed from 95% recycled materials and is powered by rooftop solar panels.

Folding bikes are the ideal solution for mutli modal journeys, avoiding the potential restrictions that existing on many rail networks, so the partnership between South West Trains and Brompton is a good fit; Folding bikes can be taken on all South West trains services without prior booking.

"Brompton bikes have already proved to be a success on our network," explained Phil Dominey, Stakeholder Manager for South West Trains. "This is the first time in the UK Brompton bikes are available from a self-service dock and we believe this will make it easier for people to cycle to or from Guildford station. It is another step in encouraging more passengers to think of alternatives to the car."
