Such is the rapidly rising popularity of leisure cycling that the West Country’s biggest end of season ride is filling faster than ever before. With entries due to close on 22 October and approaching 1200 places already filled, organisers of the Exmoor Beast now believe their parking allocation at Butlins will be tested to the limit.

“Since we moved to Minehead, in 2009, we’ve averaged about 1400 riders each time and just about fitted everyone’s vehicles in. But, we’re already 300 up on where we were this time last year. And, if things continue at this rate, we may have to look at arranging additional space outside the holiday camp. Therefore, it would really help the cause if those who are thinking about giving it a go don’t leave it to the very last minute to sign up.” said Marcus Di Vincenzo of Exeter’s event’s management company M.I.G.

Now established as one of the U.K’s. must do challenges, the Exmoor Beast, on 28 October offers all finishers a commemorative engraved tankard, free beer token and an indoor finish; unique to a British bike ride. Although the challenge is individually timed, it is not a race and soft peddlers have, if needed, over eight hours to complete the fully way-marked 100km route, which includes a free feed and drinks station at half distance. Participants are also supported by paramedic teams, mobile mechanical back-up and recovery vehicles. Those who meet the demands of the ride are then entitled to wear the event’s official cycling top, which proudly bears the legend “I’ve tamed The Beast.”

The outlook for the month’s end is looking good, with typically autumnal weather, dry and bright periods interspersed with occasional showers and temperatures close to the seasonal average. Full event details and entry options can be found at www.exmoorbeast.org
