Wet Weather, Brave Hearts at the Wiggle Magnificat!
Event: 12th June 2011

Event HQ: Newbury Racecourse

Sunday's all day wet and windy weather created a challenge for all involved in the 6th Edition of the UCI Wiggle Magnificat. Ken Robson, the event organiser pays tribute to cyclists and volunteers alike who all upped their game: cyclists who rode in continual rain and wind with determination to finish, and the teams of volunteers who gave ‘above-and-beyond' support to struggling or retiring cyclists. For many the adverse conditions heightened their sense of achievement.
Over 1500 cyclists had pre-entered to take part in the three challenging rides at 127miles, 81miles, and 51mile distances. However the persistent rain and windy conditions which came in just after all the cyclists had departed the start, was to play a major part in which distance they finished. Many cyclists took advantage of the inter-linked courses to step down from their chosen distance creating lots of post activity for TDL Event Services who, with great efficiency, produced accurate results.
Ken Robson added: "This has been our first wet Magnificat sportive, and the really wet conditions meant our main priority was to make sure every cyclist returned safely to HQ. The hot showers and changing rooms were really appreciated! Once freshened up, the cyclists could relax at the bar, enjoy hot food, listen to the Jazz band and reflect on their own special achievements in atrocious weather.
First time sportive rider Dominic Curran certainly enjoyed his success at the finish:
"It was without a doubt one of the harder 8.5 hours of my life round the 127 mile course but as my very first Sportive, the organisation of the event and enthusiasm of all the amazing volunteers on the course will take some beating. Look forward to coming back next year".
And perhaps the feelings of the day have been best captured by 127mile Rouge Lanterne Simon Lees:
"I can't express in words what a fantastic time I had on Sunday despite the weather. The support and encouragement from the excellent feed stations was fantastic. But nothing compared to the support I got over the last 12miles from the medic car, the two motorcycle safety outriders, and the fantastic reception I got at finish line. It was only my second sportive and I will definitely be booking up for next year."
Whilst the cyclists were battling against the weather brave children and families were determined to make the best of the Village HQ activities sponsored by British Cycling and JDRF Charity. Activities included Go-Ride Racing, WattBikes, agility courses and our 2.5mile multi-lap ride within Newbury Racecourse grounds.
The Wiggle Magnificat has in place a terrific framework of cycling activities in place for everyone from 6 years upwards to enjoy, and we will continue to grow and develop our event following the UCI "Cycling for All" Ethos" and looking forward to delivering our 2012 event in better weather!"
