Stage two winner Etienne Georgi (Giant CC) held on to his overall lead to win the Tour of the Kingdom Two-Day, round five of the British Cycling National Junior Road Series in Scotland.

Georgi’s team-mate Charlie Meredith kept second spot overall, while Peter Kibble (Velocity Globalbikes) retained third. Will Roberts (County Cycles RT) took the points jersey overall and Robert Gray (HMT JLT Condor) took the King of the Mountains competition from Georgi by one point.

Stage three

Ethan Hayter (VC Londres) took victory at Kennoway in the final stage of the weekend from a bunch sprint after a tough 99 kilometres around The Cults circuit.

The opening loop of a diminishing circular route saw a group of seven make the early pace across the rolling roads towards Craigrothie. The group including Harry Yates (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley), Will Roberts and Tom Pidcock (VCUK PH-MAS) soon had a 30-second lead over the main field.

Tom Chandler (VCUK PH-MAS) and Matthew Cox were off the bunch trying to bridge to the leaders but the gap was beginning to grow. More riders tried to make the gap across and the race began to splinter before the start of the shorter second lap.

The first time around the second loop saw a chase group bridge across to the leaders and the gap went out to nearly three and a half minutes back to the main field. With the race leader seeing his lead disappearing , there was a reaction from the Giant team and the bunch jumped into action for the chase.

As the race came over the climb at Porters for the final time the front group split, and Pidcock, along with Matt Walls (Velocity Globalbikes), Jacob Vaughan (VC Londres) and Robert Gray (HMT JLT Condor) jumped away and got a gap on the rest of the group, the four passing through Bonnybridge some 30 seconds to the good.

The final loop around the village of Star saw Pidcock out alone, the remainder of the day’s breaks now pulled back into the main field. But the VCUK rider couldn’t stay away from the chase and was brought back just before the final three kilometres.

Pidcock skirted around the field and tried to jump again but taking the corner too wide and clipping a car the race was over for him. Taking the final left corner, around 26 riders lined up for the sprint up the final few hundred metres but it was Hayter who had the legs for the final kick to take the win. Georgi finishing safely in the bunch to claim the overall.

Overall winner Etienne Georgi said afterwards: “I didn’t want to just sit on the front and tow it because I knew I would pay for it later in the race.

"I put the effort in up the first hill to try to get away, and throughout the race we managed to get a few more people in the chase.

“After the last two hills Charlie Meredith did a lot of work and brought the time down quite a bit, and the more we went up the road the more people worked with us. It was a pretty stressful day today!”
