Mountain biker James Hyde (Clee Cycles-KCNC) showed off his road skills to win the fourth round of the 13-race Northants CRA handicap series at Rockingham Raceway motor racing circuit.

The Kettering 19-year-old came out on top in a seven-up sprint, beating junior Keira McVitty (Team Zenith-www.buzzcycles.co.uk) into second place after an hour of racing on the 1.7-mile closed circuit.

The field was set off in two groups, separated by three minutes, and despite an average speed of 26.6 mph for the race, the faster riders failed to bridge the gap.

Eight survivors from the first group, made up of women, fourth categories and third category riders with no BC points, were still 50 seconds to the good with four laps to go, and despite losing ‘birthday boy’ Peter Kucak (Rockingham Forest Wheelers) in the closing stages, they held a gap of 20 seconds to the line with junior Kristian Woolf (Prestige VC), who had won the previous round, leading in the rest behind first-time visitor Hyde.

The series, which is open to all, resumes on June 13.
