Going clear from the bunch on the last lap, Carl Sturgeon (Lutterworth Cycle Centre) rode away to a comfortable victory in the 54-mile East Midlands Road Race League round on the Six Hills course in Leicestershire.

The Leicester 39-year-old had a lead of 42 seconds at the first time check, and with no apparent appetite for any chase, his advantage stretched out beyond a minute by the finish.

The minor placings were decided by a bunch sprint on the climb to the finish with Elliot Harrison (South Pennine RC) taking second spot ahead of Carl Dyson (Clay Cross RT), who edged out Lee Allen (Beeston RC) by half a wheel for third.

After a fast start which saw the field strung out, the pace dropped and the race bunched up for the first four laps of the 10-mile circuit apart from one or two skirmishes off the front which lacked determination and came to nothing until Sturgess, in only his second race of the season after finishing 11th in the East Midlands Region Championship a week earlier, made his winning move.
