The Pearl Izumi Tour Series will finish in Ipswich on Friday 14 June, bringing the action and excitement of professional cycle racing back to Suffolk.
It had originally been planned to include the final round of the women's Johnson Health Tech Grand Prix Series at Ipswich as a part of the Grand Final of The Pearl Izumi Tour Series.
However, SweetSpot, the creators and organisers of The Pearl Izumi Tour Series, have been made aware that due to the incredible success of women's cycling and the growth in the number of women's only events a change in the calendar is required.
Competitors in the Johnson Health Tech Grand Prix Series would have been required to race in Aylsham, Norfolk on Thursday 13 June, and Ipswich, Suffolk on Friday 14 June, followed by the CDNW Surf and Turf 2 Day National Women’s Road Series event in Blackpool on 15 and 16 June, if they were not to miss any national elite-level events.
This means that competitors wishing to take part in all of these events would have two tough days of racing in East Anglia followed by a long overnight drive to Blackpool for racing the following day.
The women's race due to be scheduled for Ipswich will now be held at Redditch on Tuesday 3 June with Aylsham hosting the final round on Thursday 13 June. This decision has been made in the interests of the competitors and Ipswich remains totally committed to the development of women's cycling. It is hoped that in 2014 the calendar can be adjusted to ensure that a women's race returns to Ipswich.
After discussions between all stakeholders, Suffolk County Council have very kindly agreed that the Johnson Health Tech Grand Prix Series event scheduled for Ipswich will now be replaced by further events for the elite professional male cyclists who will be racing at Ipswich as a part of The Pearl Izumi Tour Series. Details of this additional event will be announced in the coming weeks.
The men’s Pearl Izumi Tour Series gets underway in Kirkcaldy, Fife on Tuesday 14 May with the women’s Johnson Health Tech Grand Prix Series starting one week later in Stoke-on-Trent on Tuesday 21 May. Highlights will be shown on ITV4 in a 10pm slot the evening after every round during this year’s Series.
