Welsh raider Bevan Humphreys (Urban-Cyclery.co.uk RT) clinched his first win of the season in a sprint finish to Worcester St John CC’s 65-mile Gerry Hughes Memorial Road Race over four laps of the Welland circuit.
The 31-year-old, from Gorseinon, was in a break of eight riders which formed on the opening lap and, reduced to seven by a puncture as they established a lead of around three minutes, stayed away to the end of the race which was neutralised at one point to allow an ambulance to attend to a rider injured in a crash.
Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles) broke away from the bunch and put in a superb effort to bridge the gap to the leaders on his own, and the former national hill climb champion had enough left in the tank to take third place behind Humphreys and experienced local man Paul Dring (Team Echelon-Rotor).
