Sunday saw VC Beverley host their third annual Summer Road Race and it was Clifton CC’s Darren Bendelow who took a good win.

The race started in fine conditions with a stiff westerly breeze blunting attacks on the long uphill drag from Walkington to High Hunsley.

Despite plentiful digs off the front, the bunch stayed together for the opening few laps until Darren Bendelow and a fellow Clifton CC rider got a gap that had built to 30 seconds by the bell lap.

Further attacks within the bunch started to erode the gap to the leaders on the final ascent, and as the two Clifton riders started the fast run in from High Hunsley they had a mere 20 seconds in hand, with the bunch chasing hard behind.

The final sharp kick up before the finish line helped the chasers reel in the two leaders, but Bendelow stayed clear and took a hard-earned win just ahead of the bunch.
