Road: Bird swoops to Shropshire win

Experienced roadman Adrian Bird (Rapid Performance RT) secured his second win of the season as he led home a 14-strong front group in Newport Shropshire CC’s 55-mile Alan Goddard Memorial Road Race.

The race, over five laps of the Sherrifhales circuit near Telford, was run off in excellent conditions and a break of 15 riders quickly consolidated a healthy lead which – losing one, to cramp, on the final lap – they maintained to the finish.

In form after his second place overall in the Ras De Cymru, 37-year-old Bird proved strongest on the mile-long drag to the finish to win from under-23 Matt Clarke (Halesowen A&CC) and Stephen Smith (Vita CT).
