Richard Lang of the Rapha Condor Sharp team took victory in the Virgin Money Cyclone Leazes Criterium elite race in Newcastle in a photo finish with second placed Paul Voss of Endura Racing.

In a thrilling race which also saw Richard Lang take the points race sponsored by M Steel Cycles, third place went to Matt Cronshaw of NODE 4 Giordana Racing.

Fourth place went to Simon Holt of Team Raleigh-GAC, fifth to Simon Yates and sixth place to Scott Thwaites of Endura Racing.

Earlier in the evening, Jake Womersley of Sportscover Altura RT stormed to victory in the senior race, sponsored by Mincoff’s Solicitors. He was closely followed by Karl Denton of blumilk.com in second place. Catherine Williamson of the Bizhub FCF team was the winner of the women’s race.

Virgin Money head of communications and community Brian Giles said: “There has been a fantastic standard of racing here tonight, and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the weekend involving so many riders. We’re proud that the Cyclone is Virgin Money’s first cycling event.”

Newcastle’s Leazes Park provided a sunny start for the Virgin Money Cyclone weekend following the cancellation of the Tyne Six Bridges rides due to rain on Thursday (28 June) night.

On Saturday 30 June more than 3,500 riders from beginners to professionals will take to the roads of Northumberland in the Virgin Money Cyclone Challenge rides.

On Sunday it is the turn of the professionals again in the Curlew Cup women’s race from 9.30am and Beaumont Trophy men’s race from 1pm from the village of Stamfordham.
