The start of the North West Youth Tour final preparations for the are underway.
The event manual has been finished and is ready to be sent out to all the riders and the final rider list has been produced which shows 331 starters for the 2012 edition of the North West Youth Tour promoted by Cycling Development North West which is an increase on the numbers from last year. The entries have gone from strength to strength over the past four years.
We are delighted to welcome 12 competitors from Europe including six girls from Holland representing WRV De Peddalaars, and a national squad from the Czech Republic. Add to that the home nations of England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man the biggest youth race on the British calender boasts riders from six countries.
The North West Youth Tour takes place between 2– 4 June over the Queen’s Jubilee weekend. There are five stages over three action packed days of racing. The first day takes place at the UCLan Sports Arena in Preston. The first stage of the double day there will be a day for the sprinters with each of the categories racing over a short sprint race to decide the first riders to wear the leader’s jerseys. The afternoon will see a longer race around the one mile circuit in Preston.
Day two will see the riders travel to Lancaster to race on the fast Salt Ayre Circuit. There are two stages on the Sunday giving the bunch sprinters a time to shine before the race moves on the final stage on the Blackpool Sea Front. This stage will see the race really come to light with the tough circuit on the sea front. In previous editions of the race this stage has been on the first day and has seen the race more or less wrapped up after that day of racing. By moving this stage to the final day it will see the race really hang in the balance throughout the weekend and will see the riders putting everything on the line to win the overall.
The race this year has had generous support from Broadhursts Optomotrists, McDade Roberts, Able Skip Hire, PocPac, Automotive Export Limited, WestVale Hotel and supporting the event since its inception British Cycling, Cycling Blackpool and the UCLan Sports Arena.
A new feature of the race this year will be a presentation evening on the Monday night with a fish n chip supper hosted by one of the race sponsors the Imperial Hotel. The final presentations will be done on this evening and will give the riders chance to have a get together before everyone heads off home.
The day following the Youth Tour Tuesday 5 June will see ‘the big warm-down ride’. The warm down ride is being run by CDNW in conjunction with the Lewis Balyckyi Trust Fund which has been set up to help young riders achieve their ambitions. The rides will begin at 10.30am and leave in half hourly slots along the Blackpool sea front. Entry to the event is by donation only and all money will go towards the trust. Signing on for the event will be at the Imperial Hotel. The ride has been aimed at families and will be a great day out down the coast.
