James Dunlop (Biketreks) sprinted to victory at the end of the Capernwray Road Race in Lancashire on Sunday, an 80 kilometre race based around the sun-drenched village of Aughton.
The 20-year-old held off Maxgear rival Michael Ashurst for the win, while Sam Peddar (Base2Race) completed the podium in third spot.
There was a fast start with most of the full field willing to try their luck but for a lap and a half the race stayed together, with no one willing to let any rider gain any time. The third time up Sunny Bank there was a split in the field with a dozen riders gaining about 20 seconds, but with the peloton chasing furiously it was never going to stick.
With two laps to go Jimmy Froggatt (Wills Wheels) turned the clock back two or three years and pushed a huge gear to open up a 50-second gap and was still hanging in there at the start of the last lap.
However, he was reeled back in halfway round the last lap, so it was all down to who climbed Sunny Bank best and probably the two strongest riders in the race, Dunlop and Ashurst, who sprinted it out with Dunlop easing away to win fairly comfortably.
