In addition to the well established Premier Calendar event, The Tour Doon Hame (previously the famous Girvan 3 Day), there is another big stage race happening in Scotland this Easter weekend, as the 2012 Youth Tour of Scotland gets underway on Good Friday morning with a one mile prologue time trial in the grounds of Strathallan School, Forgandenny near Perth.

The prologue will be followed later in the day with a short but very technical team time trial at the same venue.

The new three day event on the youth calendar, with the support of Perth & Kinross Council and Tayside Police, offers something relatively unique on mainland Britain – fully closed, Kermesse sized, road race circuits for youth bike racers in teams. Thirty-six clubs, race teams, regional squads and the Ireland Talent Team make up the start list of 145 young girls and boys in teams of four. The girls’ field of 45 is made up of both youth A and B riders whilst the 100 up boys’ race is youth A only. The race will also take in a flat course on Easter Saturday followed by a challenging hilly course to finish on Easter Sunday.

Commenting on the event, Youth Tour of Scotland organisers said: “Both sets of riders will certainly be keen to pull on the race winners yellow jerseys at the end of four challenging stages but just like in the Tour de France, they will also be able to chase the wearing of the green points jerseys, the polka dot king of the mountains jerseys, the white young riders jerseys and the best team classification with the wearing of the blue jerseys.

“It should all make for a really exciting weekend of youth stage racing and you can keep up to date with results, pics and general info about what’s happening on the race website – www.youthtourofscotland.com.”

Support races on Good Friday for younger riders can be entered on the day.
