THE two longmarker groups joined up and worked well together to stay clear and contest the finish of the third round of the Northants CRA Handicap Series with victory going to third-category Owen Rogers (St Ives CC).

Rogers (pictured above in red) outsprinted Warren Drew, of host club Rockingham Forest Wheelers, and David Robinson (Kettering CC) after three laps of the 10-mile Valley Circuit, based on Middleton.

Behind them, a high-speed crash around two miles from the finish accounted for some 20 riders with the biggest casualties ferried to hospital.

“The result was many cuts and bruises, torn lycra and battered bikes, but as far as we know, nothing worse,” said Association secretary Dave Birch. “The air ambulances and 'wheeled ambulance' did a wonderful job of getting the two most seriously injured riders quickly to hospital.”

Andy Veasey (Rockingham Forest Wheelers) was taken to University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire, in Coventry, by air ambulance and is being kept under sedation. Has broken bones around the top of his neck area, but is said to have movement in his arms and legs so hopefully will pick up in next few days. Also has facial cuts and bruising.

Simon Pitchford (Fenland Clarion CC) went to hospital for x-rays re suspected broken collarbone/shoulder.
