Debut Win for Watson in Bontrager RR

Leighton, Shropshire
Promoted by: Paramount CRT
Event: 2nd July 2011
Report: Snowdon Sports

THE promoting club's Richard Watson secured his first road race victory when he sprinted home at the end of Paramount CRT's Summer Bontrager Road Race in Shropshire on Sunday.

Watson looked strong as he held off two breakaway rivals on the climb to the finish, crossing the line a couple of bike lengths clear of Kenilworth Wheelers' Paul Aldridge, while Matthew Bonehill (Stafford RC) was third.

The race largely stayed together for much of the 56 miles, with only two or three attempts to break away getting quickly checked by an alert bunch.

However, on the last of six laps of a circuit based near Leighton, two rider attacked and were soon joined by another five to form a leading group.

The pace meant that was whittled down to just three as they headed for the final mile, and Watson had enough left in the tank to take the win.

Result:
1 Richard Watson (Paramount CRT) 2:26:00
2 Paul Aldridge (Kenilworth Wheelers)
3 Matthew Bonehill (Stafford RC) all @ same time
4 Mike Garner (Birkenhead North End CC) @ 50sec

7 Mark Wilkes (Birmingham CC)
=8 Alex Simmons (Lyme RC)
