The first round of the Leisure Lakes Circuit Series at Cheltenham racecourse started under torrential showers and windy conditions. Over 34 riders took to the start line, braving the awful conditions that awaited them.

A high number of local riders had entered the race. Cheltenham based riders included; Jon Maxwell and Duncan Jamieson from Leisure Lakes RT, Harry Wilton, Ian Threadgold, Ben Pedley, Dave Squire from Cheltenham and County CC and Richard Cleaver from Velo Club Montpellier. The race also included riders who had travelled from as far as Exeter. The 30km race consisted of 45 minutes plus five laps and was thrilling right from the off.

The fast and speeding peloton quickly got up to race speed on the wet and slippery circuit. Daniel Harris (Halesowen A&CC) was first to show himself at the head of the race, attacking after lap 3. He quickly pulled out a strong gap but with riders eager to warm themselves up in the cold conditions, he was soon pulled back into the heart of the bunch.

As the peloton negotiated the testing circuit, much to the amazement of the large crowd of supporters, it became apparent that it was going to be tough for anyone to escape. Dan Bill of Cult Racing and Harris tried again midway throughout the race and managed to thin the peloton down to 15 or so riders.

Jamieson, who lives in Hatherley and rides for event sponsor Leisure Lakes, had a quiet early start to the race and at the finish, explained that he had not been feeling too well at the beginning of the race. However, he regained his energy and put in a blistering attack with only 3 laps remaining which left the main peloton confused and in bits. Jamieson, a former GB mountain biker, powered away from his rivals and took a solo win in great style in front of a home crowd. Luke Dunbar, from Stroud based Team Qoroz, took a fine second place, winning the bunch sprint behind, and Daniel Harris (Halesowen A&CC) took a hard fought third place.

At the finish, Jamieson said: "It was fantastic to finally win here at the Leisure Lakes Circuit Series. Over the last two years, I've had second and third places but the win has always eluded me until today - its great. Can't wait until next week!"

The women's race was won by Marianne Britten riding for VC St Raphael.

The final round of the Leisure Lakes Bikes Circuit Series at Cheltenham racecourse will be this Friday 1st July on the eve of the start of the Tour de France. Youth racing starts at 7PM with the main race kicking off around 7:30PM. A BBQ and music will be provided. Spectating at the event is free.
