Event Details

Over 160 youngsters braved the wet weather to compete in the 2011 North East round of the National Youth Circuit Series. In association with British Cycling North East, with support from local clubs Hetton Hawks CC, Durham University CC and Cestria Cycles RT, National youth racing returned to the splendid North East venue. Despite the damp conditions and the odd downpour the event went ahead and saw some aggressive racing, especially from the youth B girls and youth A boys.

YOUTH A BOYS

The Youth A boys was the biggest field of the weekend with over 50 riders took to the start line. Umbrellas protected the riders during the commissaries briefing, indicating the severity of the conditions. Racing over 60km in these conditions proved a real test, with several attacks in the early stages. However, everything was brought back together for the first sprint lap and Tom Arnstein took first blood. The pace stepped up again leading to the fastest lap of the weekend with the second sprint lap was taken by Jake Womersley. The attacks continued throughout the final third of the race until the riders took the left hand bend for the final time to the up hill finish, Ollie Wood, riding for Aire Valley Racing Team, taking victory.

GIRLS A&B MORNING RACE

40km, 22 laps of the rolling Hetton circuit for the A & B girls, umbrellas still required for spectators and riders as they lined up. The race saw attacks from the off with some strong performances from the top ranked riders in the series. Nothing decisive came from the early exchanges and the field remained together for the sprint lap. In the B sprint laps Grace Garner, Leicestershire Road Club took a clean sweep winning both. The A sprints were both taken by Melissa Lowther of Planet X.

With the final sprint lap completed, the attacks continued to settle the overall placings. A group of three forged ahead; Grace Garner, Leicestershire Road, Abby-Mae Parkinson, Aire Valley Racing Team and Charlotte Broughton. The trio's worked efficiently together and the gap continued to grow. As the pace grew the steady rain turned into a down pour. With no significant moves forming from the main group, who appeared to have settled for a sprint for 4th place, the three riders had the podium places in the bag. Garner attacked in the final stages and took a well earned victory, followed by Abby-Mae Parkinson, third was taken by Charlotte Broughton.

YOUTH B BOYS

32 Youth B boys headed out for the 50km race, the rain continued, but did'nt damped the spirits of the riders. The sprint laps were taken by James Ireson, Wolverhampton Wheelers. Ireson, managed to maintain his speed for a final victory sprint, taking maximum points for the B race.
