The free event, hosted by British Cycling and Sky, in partnership with Leicester City Council, allowed riders to take in an 8km route at their own pace whilst enjoying some of the city's most well-known landmarks including The Town Hall, Phoenix Square and the Clock Tower. Participants were treated to a whole host of activities and entertainment throughout the day along the route, as well as in the green open spaces of Abbey Park.

Sky Ride Leicester is just one of the many ways local residents can get back on their bikes through this year's Sky Ride campaign, which aims to get a million more people cycling by 2013. Sky Ride Local rides are running every Sunday through the summer in and around Leicester, which take in everything from the countryside to local sights. British Cycling's Breeze network is also organising bike rides for women.

Meanwhile, 50 miles down the M1, 4000 people joined TV Personality Jeff Brazier, Team Sky's Christian Knees and Matthew Hayman, and World and Paralympic champion cyclist Jody Cundy for Sky Ride Milton Keynes.
