On Sunday 31 July, The Mayor of London's Sky Ride Hillingdon will take place - a free event offering people of all ages and abilities the chance to ride around their local area on traffic-free streets.

The event is the first of three Mayor of London Sky Rides in 2011, including a central London event on Sunday 4th September. Sky Ride is a national campaign to get one million people cycling regularly by 2013. The campaign includes free events, activities, information and support to help and inspire people of all ages and abilities to re-discover the fun they can have on two wheels.

The Mayor of London, Sky and British Cycling, in partnership with Hillingdon Council, and TfL have organised the 9km route, which will be traffic-free from 10am to 4pm allowing participants to join the ride at their own pace and enjoy some of the exciting entertainment along the course.

TV presenter, Jeff Brazier, Para-Olympic Champions Sarah and Barney Storey, and Kulveer Ranger the Mayor of London's Environmental Director are set to join cyclists on the day giving participants the chance to cycle alongside them.

Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor of London's Director of Environment, said: "The Mayor wants to see his cycling revolution in all parts of our great city and it's fantastic that we can bring this great Sky Ride event to Hillingdon. It's a fantastic opportunity to sample the delights of cycling on a traffic free route. This is an event for all of us, regardless of age or ability. Cllr Henry Higgins, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said: "We are delighted to be hosting a Sky Ride this year. It's a great opportunity for residents to cycle the borough's roads without worrying about traffic. Hillingdon has some wonderful parks and green spaces and cycling is a fantastic way to see these sites."

Participants will be treated to a whole host of activities and entertainment throughout the day including buskers along the route to provide a soundtrack to your ride.

Under 16's who really want to burn some rubber head to the Go-Ride Racing to get tips from the pros and get a taste for competitive cycling by racing on the specially designed course. All riders will receive a ‘goody bag' and those who come in at 1st 2nd or 3rd will also receive a special certificate.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day and the ‘Keep Cycling Zone' will offer information hint, tips and advice on all the other fantastic ways to get back on your bike. The Metropolitan Police will also be on hand to offer guidance on how to stay safe when you're on your bike.

Hillingdon is also one of thirteen boroughs that the Mayor and TfL awarded biking borough status to in 2010. They have pledged to put cycling at the heart of their local transport delivery plans and they will receive extra support and expertise from TfL in a bid to encourage more people to cycle in the local area.

The Mayor of London's Sky Ride Hillingdon is just one of the many ways local residents can get back on their bikes through the Sky Ride campaign. Sky Ride Local Rides are free, local led-rides running every Sunday through the summer in and around Hillingdon. There is also the Breeze network - a programme of bike rides and support just for women and Bike Maintenance Workshops will be taking place in London on 23rd and 24th September to help everyone keep riding with confidence.

The nationwide search for the Perfect Hill will ask entrants to nominate their favourite hill to cycle down, taking in to consideration the view and surroundings, location, individuality and heritage and their emotional connection to the hill. Plus all entrants will be in with the chance of winning a bike!
