British mountain bike marathon specialist Sally Bigham recorded a career-best result at the 2011 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships, in Montebelluna, Italy finishing sixth against a field including two Olympic Cross Country Champions, and UCI Mountain Bike World Cup winners.

But Bigham missed the decisive break in the 100km race, as two punctures slowed her progress while in the lead group of ten riders.

That lead pack contained Esther Suss, Annika Langvad, Sabine Spitz and Pia Sundstedt who would go on to contest race.

Langvad attacked without response to take the World Championship title by two minutes, while Spitz crossed the line with over a minute to Suss. Pia Sundstedt finished fourth alongside Elizabeth Brandau at five minutes, with Bigham sixth at nine minutes.

Jane Nuessli was the second Brit over the line in 13th place, finishing at 21 minutes.
