Over 40 young riders entered The Horsham Youth Cycling Club Go-Ride cycle race at The Hop Oast Park and Ride in October as a really successful afternoon of racing was enjoyed by all.

The riders included representatives from seven clubs right across the south-east region as well as some unattached riders from local schools. Cycling clubs that were represented included VC Jubilee, Preston Park YCC, Team Darrent (Dartford), Redhill Raiders, Sutton CC, Southborough & District Wheelers and of course the host club, Horsham Youth Cycling Club which fielded 12 youngsters from its ranks into their very first competitive action.

All riders took part in three races - a time trial where riders were started individually at staggered intervals, age-banded scratch races and team relays. Lots of parents watched and cheered on the riders to make for a great atmosphere and the fact that the weather behaved itself was a big bonus.

The internal road layout made an interesting challenge for the riders who were able to practice their cornering skills round tight corners as well as the use of gears whilst accelerating out of corners. Whilst the various age groups waited for their turn to race again, coach led activities were run for the riders to practice and enhance their skills as well as to warm up safely.

First, second and third placed riders received medals and prizes and all riders received a water bottle to acknowledge their efforts.

Thanks go to the support from the Sally Page and Ben Miller of VCJ for their organisational skills as well as the volunteers, including the many CAYV (Cycling Award Young Volunteers) who travelled from VC Jubilee and the Horsham Youth Cycling Club volunteers and coaches.

Horsham YCC are moving from strength to strength with growing participation at their club sessions and should be very proud at hosting such an impressive event with so many of the region's Go-Ride clubs in attendance.
