A record number of attendees joined the Go-Ride team at the five Go-Ride Conferences, which took place across the country throughout March. Nearly 500 volunteers attended, participating in workshops focussing on development of coaching practices, safeguarding, club marketing and opportunities for young volunteers to get further involved in the sport.

The key focus of the day’s activities was to build on the success of 2012 and provide support and guidance to clubs looking to cope with  the boost in numbers and help to ensure quality of experience for both existing and new riders.

The day enabled clubs to take stock and reflect on what has been an incredible year for the sport, at both the grass roots and the elite level. There were plenty of opportunities to network and share ideas with volunteers from across the country, whilst a number of exciting new initiatives were introduced, such as the Coaching Young Riders workshop, the launch of the National Youth Forum and the Volunteer Co-ordinator workshop, which was delivered to experienced young volunteers for the first time.

Development Manager for Clubs and Volunteers, Andrew Chaston said: “It’s been a fantastic month for us, getting to meet and learn from all the volunteers who make cycling tick at the grassroots level. This year saw a 35% increase in the number of attendees at the conferences and a whopping 130 young volunteers attended which just shows the enthusiasm amongst the Go-Ride clubs. The feedback has been very positive and we will continue to try to improve the experience for our volunteers next year.”

Some delegate feedback:

‘Very well set-up and thought out in both content and delivery’

‘Fantastic to realise there is such a structured approach to develop cycling in Britain’

‘A good day and very inspirational to hear what’s going on and what one can do as it embarks on Go Ride’

The dedication and contribution of volunteers within Go-Ride clubs was also celebrated at the conferences. Cycling could not function at the grass roots or even international level without the time and effort of many volunteers in all aspects of the sport.

The Awards recognised the efforts of volunteers across a number of categories: Young Volunteer, Club Official, Club Coach and Event Official. A winner from each category in every region was selected and those able to attend were presented with their awards in front of peers.

Andrew commented: “The awards were just a small token of appreciation for the huge amount of commitment the volunteers have. It was fantastic to recognise their efforts in front of so many of their peers. We are also very grateful to those who nominated individuals. Be sure to look out for the 2013 awards towards the end of this year”
