The world record set by the Great Britain women’s team pursuit squad at the Olympic Velodrome could be broken multiple times in 2012, believes Dani King.
Along with Joanna Rowsell and Laura Trott, King formed the line-up which rode a 3:18.148 to claim gold at the London Track World Cup, beating the world record that had been set by Australia only moments earlier in the bronze medal ride off.
The result means the team goes to April’s track world championships as favourites, not only on the back of a world record but as defending champions, with King having won the title in 2011 alongside Laura Trott and Wendy Houvenaghel in Apeldoorn. King, who missed the qualifying ride at the Olympic test event before riding in final, believes the record will be improved on again as teams reach peak form.

We can’t lose focus now, it’s driving us on further so we are going to train hard now, focus on that big goal. We have got the worlds as another stepping stone but obviously the Olympics are our main focus.”
The 21-year-old, who rides for Horizon Fitness, was absent from the qualifying rides before being called up for the final and paid homage to her teammates’ support.
She added: “I had to keep my head screwed on and focused. I supported the girls as much as I could and then when I was told that I was going into the team I just thought ‘I can do the job well’. It’s down to the team - I have to thank them for believing in me.
“Anything can happen [regarding selection], we’re a team of four going forward, we’ll just train hard and the fastest team will be up there at the worlds.”
