The winner of the East and South East Cyclo-Cross Championship, Taylor Johnstone took victory in the Vicious Velo Double Cross, staged at Herne Hill in London on Saturday.

The first race in a weekend of action at the venue which culminated with a round of the London League on Sunday, the event attracted many of the region’s top riders which meant 19-year-old Londoner Johnstone had to be on top form to take the win.

He held off a stern challenge from East and South East Championships junior winner and GB rider Harry Franklin (Hargroves Cycles) to take the win, while the 17-year-old took second ahead of Hackney GT rider Matt Webber – a prolific winner and more than twice his age.

In other categories, Cyclelab placed two riders on the women’s podium with Leona Kadir taking the win ahead of Verity Appleyard (Brotherton Cycles) while Anett Deli (Cyclelab) took third.

GS Henley’s Mike Simpson – who was crowned top veteran in the South of England Championships earlier this month – won the over-40 veterans race ahead of Will Girvan (North Hampshire RC), while the winner of the over-50 category was Mick Bell (London Fire Brigade CC) – again, a regional championship winner in the East and South East race earlier this month.

Condor Cycles’ David Barnes won the Under-16 boys race, while Hargroves Cycles’ starlet Dan Tulett – who is leading the National Trophy Series standings - was an easy winner of the Under-14 boys.
