Tony Fawcett (Black Hawk Bikes) won a dramatic sprint finish at the end of round 13 of the North East League staged at Durham University Cricket Club on Sunday.

Second in the last round, 33-year-old Stanley-based rider Fawcett (pictured above) stepped up to the top of the podium by the narrowest of margins when he beat rival Matt Kipling (MTS Cyclesport) by just one second in the sprint for the line at the end of a cold race.

The pair had been stuck together for much of the race, and crossed the line almost two minutes ahead of third-placed Tony Glover (Derwentside CC), while best veteran, Kenny Johnson (Science in Sport.com) was fourth, 12 seconds behind Glover.

It was Fawcett’s seventh CXNE race so far this season, and he has not finished off the podium in any of those. Sunday’s victory was his fourth win, and bodes well for his league challenge.

Fawcett slipped during the 12th round and had to settle for second behind junior Adam Martin, but he made no such errors this week as he powered around the course.
